Bob Barr Flips on Drug Laws

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

He has apparently signed on with the Marijuana Policy Project.

I think this is terrific news. Barr’s profile and credibility with the right will bring new attention to the drug war. So far, reason commenters have been fairly hard on him. I’m not sure that’s fair. “Flip-flopping” is one thing when it’s a candidate who has transparently changed his position to pander to voters. It’s quite another when a guy, out of office, has a change of heart. Not to mention the fact that even if Barr does have designs on returning to public office, adopting a position opposing the drug war (1) certainly doesn’t help him toward that end, and (2) would make his new stance all the more valuable.

Barr has nothing to gain from this. So I fail to see how it’s in any way opportunistic.

I say welcome aboard.
