Wednesday, February 4th, 2004Two (unintentionally) comical items from National Review Online. In the first, proud bigot and anti-immigration immigrant John Derbyshire bizarrely claims that those on the “pro” side of the immigration debate are…racist?
If you look very closely you can sometimes catch sight of other, less pretty things: cold cash self-interest and naked racism. (”Let’s see, I can have my yard work done for $10 an hour by a cheerful small brown foreigner, or for $20 an hour by a surly large black American. Hmmm…..”)
I think Derb’s projecting, here. I’d say that the $10 vs. $20 per hour part of the equation is far more pertinent than the blackness, browness, surliness or cheerfulness of the labor.
Then there’s this really odd contribution to The Corner from our old pal Stanley Kurtz:
If you think Janet Jackson was something, take a look at this. This is part of the deepening differences between predominantly secular Scandinavia and Northern Europe, on the one hand, and more traditionally Catholic parts of Southern and Eastern Europe, on the other.
One death metal band from Norway performs on Polish TV and it’s symptomatic of the schism between Godless Scandinavian Lutherans and devout South European Catholics? And what’s Kurtz’s implication, here? That Janet Jackson’s boob shot means we’re on a short road to goat-sacrificing Norwegian black metal halftime shows? And wasn’t it the Pope’s Italy that elected a boob-flashing porn star to its parliament?
Is it safe to assume that Kurtz is largely ignorant of the death metal scene here in the God-fearing US of A?
Kurtz’s statement should be put in context: He recently had an article in the (cough) Weekly Standard arguing the liberalization of gay marriage laws in Scandanavia are directly responsible for the breakdown of traditional marriage and other wholesome social institutions. His arguments are irrational, which is no surprise to me given they’re rooted in religious ethics. The same is true of his Janet Jackson-death metal argument: Any deviation from traditional morality is inherently evil.
Derbyshire’s not anti-immigrant, he’s anti-illegal immigrant. Important distinction you casually gloss over.
You may not like what he says about Hispanic workers vs. African-American workers, but the evidence of who employers prefer to hire is hard to misinterpret.
The best reason to read the Corner is to witness that it is, for a blog laboring under the “conservative” banner, a remarkably self-righting piece of work. That is, fellow Cornerites are usually the first to call out bits of their colleagues hyperventilation.
For example, shortly after Kurtz posted his silly phobias about Euro metal, Andrew Stuttaford replied, “Stanley, Norwegians are vikings. That concert looks like a very quiet day in Valhalla, if you ask me.”
Derbyshire continues to demonstrate his ability to write a column equal to the most uninspiring B-Movie. When what little substance and style he has begins to fade he throws in something outlandish and stupid and then moves on as if it never happened or it’s purpose is so clear and brilliant that it needs no explanation or elaboration.
Bravo.
Tip to National Review: Whip out the endoscope, I think you have a blockage.
It seemed to me that Kurtz was talking about the reaction to the concert, not the fact of its taking place, and the Catholic factor relates to the comment about Krakow being “the Pope’s city”.
That’s how I read it, at any rate.

Do you think all of the former MEChA members who push for illegal immigration (Gil Cedillo, Antonio Villaraigosa, Raul Grijalva, etc. etc.) would say and do the same things if most of our illegal immigrants were coming from Sweden? Can you imagine CA Dem Party chairman Art Torres referring to a bill as the “last gasp of Brown America in California” or the “last gasp of Black America in California?” Can you imagine Art Torres saying “California is going to be a Swedish state, and anyone who doesn’t like it should leave. They should go back to New England.”
Likewise, if most illegal immigrants were coming from Sweden, many white people would do the same things that Hispanic politicians and activists do. However, the difference would be that they would be called racists or at least too pro-white.
I’ll say it again: anyone who doesn’t think that many “pro-immigration” politicians and activists are racists does not know what they’re talking about.
Here’s my question: why would a racist “prefer” a Hispanic to an African-American? Wouldn’t they be just as bad in their eyes? Couldn’t racists make compelling arguments that the immigrant is actually WORSE? Why is the pay scale difference suddenly irrelevant?

There is a big difference between opposing illegal immigration and opposing all immigration, and I have a hard time believing your mischaracterization of Derbyshire’s views wasn’t deliberate.

How can you be so inexperienced and naive to even say that?
Oh, wait, I get it. You think someone being a “racist” automatically implies they’re white (preferably an “Anglo”).
I realize some “liberals” (not necessarily you) think that People of Color cannot be racists, because racism implies power, and, since People of Color have no power, they cannot be racist no matter how racist they are.
If that is your thinking, you’re wrong. In fact, under the current tyranny of the MultiCulti Cult, whites who say something that could be taken as a slight indication of racism are immediately crucified, whereas Racists of Color are given free passes by the handful. (Compare, for instance, Trent Lott’s remarks with those from Art Torres).
Not to mention Rush Limbaugh, whose McNabb comment wasn’t racist by any stretch of the imagination.
Well I, for one, would certainly prefer Norwegian Death Metal to the shite put on at the Stupid Bowl half-time show. Maybe we could have some extreme metal band sacrifice Justin Timberwank at the half-time show next year.
Who know Justin could go metal in the end, after all that is what Vanilla Ice ended up doing.
