Two Things
My contribution (via The Agitator. The two things about developing software: You can only choose two of time, money, quality. 0 + 0 = 0 If the later point seems mysterious, read on (as Steve would say)….
The Two Things principle is millenia old — a wise man once boiled down all the commandments of the Bible into Two Things:
> Love God with your total being.
> Love your neighbor as much as you love yourself.
However, civil engineering does not quite fit the Two Things rule, for there is one more fundamental principle in this discipline:
>>> Crap flows downhill
The only crap that pisses me off is the lack of a scrollbar in Mozilla Firebird, when this damn comments box pops up.
Two things about database administration:
1. Backups are life. You can screw up anything you want, miss deadlines on projects, or whatever and it likely won’t get you fired, but if you don’t have backups in a crisis or an audit you’re done.
2. From Knuth, via ESR, and it applies to database admninistration as much as Unix Programming: Premature optimization is the root of all evil.
jujube, I thought I was the only one. My solution has been to click on “permalink” instead of “comments”, that way it brings up basically the same thing, but in the full window. Or I guess you could open it in a new tab.
And since I’m a CS major, the two things about programming:
1. Idiocy increases faster than idiot-proofing.
2. All compiling errors boil down to a missing semicolon.
