Ashcroft Sucks — the Summary
Friday, February 28th, 2003So when Ashcroft was nominated to be AG, many on the left took swipes at him as a racist. They noted his warm relationship with the Southern Partisan, a Confederacy-glorifying periodical. They noted his talks to the Council of Conservative Citizens, another notoriously bigoted organization.
Seems to me, one could have made one of two conclusions vis-a-vis Ashcroft at the time: either he’s a racist, or he’s a principled “states’ rights conservative,” willing to weather the racist label in order to uphold the principles of federalism.
Seems clear to me now that Aschcroft doesn’t give two shits about states’ rights or federalism (see the five posts below). Seems to me he’s hellbent on imposing his morality on the rest of us, the Tenth Amendment be damned.

Your fucking kidding me. I am probably ten times more ghetto than you but can you actually sit there and tell me morality isn’t practical? You’re either too young or a liar. Fuck man, wake up.
I knew from the moment that he was nominated that Ashcroft was going to be trouble. He has about as much regard for the Constitution as Reno did…the only difference is that he hasn’t pulled a Waco yet. That’s not to say his DEA thugs haven’t done enough damage in their own way. He’s hit the bong sellers . He’s gone after the terminally ill. They can’t get high and they can’t get help in ending their pain. Word has it that he’s gearing up for some “obscenity” prosecutions soon. CAPPS II is about to go into effect at the airports. He even hunted down a guy who was selling mod chips for play stations. It’s enough to make me vote democrat next election if for no other reason than to send Ashcroft into the private sector. It’s enough for me to go to one of those stupid anti-war/anti-globalization/free mumia/drink beer not milk/anti-biogenetic protests. I’m having a serious problem deciding which party is really the lesser of two evils these days…

Government is way out of line when its used to force someone elses morality on you. For instance I would never use the f-word in a written statement, and find it obscene, but I sure don’t believe anyone should write a federal law against it, and that you should be severely prosecuted for it. Which it would seem that you would.
Didn’t Ashcroft annoint himself with oil when he was sworn in. Who does he think he is, the Pope? Ashcroft is th ereal reason there’s a separation of church and state.
Rather shocking, Boo, that you knew that Ashcroft was going to be trouble the minute he was nominated. After all, his record in the Senate was much, much better on civil liberties.
The DOJ is largely pursuing the exact same legislative and operational priorities that it did under Reno. Sorry Radley, you haven’t convinced me that Ashcroft is racist. Rather, you’ve convinced me that he hasn’t changed anything. Of course, he promised in his confirmation hearings that it would be business as usual anyway. (The Democrats begged him to say it.)
The bong sellers, terminally ill, file-sharers, whatever, were all under just as much danger from the DOJ under Clinton and Reno. I’m certainly upset that there’s been no change for the better, but I guess I’m not completely surprised. All those things are still the law, and they’re still illegal. (Of course, I’d love to have the DOJ refuse to enforce illegitimate laws, but I don’t see that happening under anyone, really. Certainly not for federalism concerns do I expect the DOJ to refuse to pursue the drug laws.)
