(late to the comment section, I know, but I've been falling behind on my reader due to life.) turns out the guy was a member of may chapter of my fraternity back in the undergrad days (could probably figure out who I am based on that thought the miracle of modern googling). He stopped by one day as an alumnus while I was there and everyone thought he seemed like a cool enough guy, if not packing on the pounds at the time(this was a solid 11 years. Effort the incident pictured). But it's haunted me since that this is the behavior of essentially normal people when you put them in these positions with these policies long enough. When a tendency to want to be superior to those around you is augmented by a rule book that tells you that you are. When you answer calls to people at their worst day, seeing yourself as better because you may not happen to be feeling just as bad as they do at the time. Living life viewing things as us vs them, when them is the human race... It haunts me to think, as an agitator tot, that there, but for the grace of God, go I.

Re comment #3: Every political system fucks up sometimes. I'm sure with some digging I could bring to your attention some systematic pattern of lawbreaking by an American corporation that simultaneously defrauded its shareholders and conducted medical research on the blood and tissues of people who had not given permission for their flesh to be tested. Then I could say "ha ha, you support individual corporations competing for money in a free (for some value of free, where the government already pays out more per capita than the governments of most single-payer countries, but we'll let that slide) market! Isn't that ironic! It's like a billion spoons and all you wanted was a smaller, less intrusive state!" But that would be a bad argument.

You may object that you are an anarchist, and then I can say, "Lendu militias in eastern Congo just killed a bunch of innocent people last weekend, and raped many women to death. The private rights enforcing groups the various villages muster up keep rapaciously turning on their neighbors till the country is burned black to the bone. How's that actually existing anarchy working out for you? You are refuted by irony, qua Alanis Morissette!" This, frankly, has some merit, but it is still below the belt.

I support strong unions despite being a libertarian in many ways because I think it is the only way that labor can be a counterweight to capital, to conduct free negotiations with it. Nothing could be less fair or free than to deny men and women the right to form a common association to negotiate on all their behalves, since each alone has no power. Unions ended child labor, gave us the weekend, the concept of reasonable work hours and overtime, safety regulations, and many more things. Libertarians are always in favor of these after they pass but regard them as a shocking infringement of freedom beforehand. One rarely sees people advocating a return to allowing child labor in factories (I don't think Newt Gingrich counts); to allowing locking workers into workshops with no fire escapes. Sure, unions featherbed, they let assholes go on working, they do dumbass things. The often abet police abuses and they should get smacked down for that. Excesses should be curbed by lawmakers, but the principle is sound as ever. "Right to work" was always popular in the Southern states most dominated by white suprematist groups and most fearful of race riots (which they thought agitation for labor rights would allow.) This remains true till now. South Carolina could use some damn unions, trust me.
