I was quite intrigued when I first learned the historic meaning of "the pub" and "the bar," with the bar not meaning the long table that drinks where served but actually, literally, the bars that were dropped over the long table, closing the space to liquor service. Thence the pub, or rather "public", use of the tavern space took over for the discussion of more important, current affairs involving the larger group in attendance.

the quartering of British troops (very much including the compelled provisioning of food and drink) was one of the American colonists’ greatest grievances against the British in the period leading up to the American Revolution. Hence, the Third Amendment.

However, one the Constitution was ratified and Washington got the standing army he wanted, we have again been required to provide housing, food, and drink to soldiers, and it continues to this very day.

But we notice the imposition less because it's applied impersonally and obfuscated, and the expense is borne by all of us rather than only by the well-off as was then the case.
