With this development in Illinois, one of the toughest states on the record-the-police issue, coming after the favorable ruling by the 1st Circuit, and all the other developments in this area over the last 6 months, it really begins to feel as if the tide is turning in favor of recognizing the right to record the police engaged in the performance of their duties in public places.

@Ted S…I agree. While I understand the benefits of bailing out banks as a useful tool to prevent panic in markets, the behavior of the banks leading to their meltdown was irresponsible enough that all the bailouts did was encourage them to take on even more irresponsible risk because they figure they’re bulletproof. That’s why I’ll never have an account with Bank of America again if I can help it. Absolutely garbage bank run by garbage executives.

Plus, it’s not like every bank had the same problems the bailout banks did. Plenty of smart bankers out there recognized the real estate bubble for what it was and got out of it to protect their investors’ money…I’d much rather see those bankers being able to buy up failed banks’ assets rather than see the failed bankers get another shot.

Was entranced by the Syd Finch article. For some reason as I finished the story glanced down and saw the date on the corner of the page (subscription copies were mailed out about a week ahead of the cover date) and knew I had been taken by one of the best April Fool jokes ever.

The Michael Lewis article referenced in your top magazine articles link wasone of the best I’ve ever read and should be considered a must-read for anyone who wants to see how disconnected Wall Street is from both reality and business ethics. The CDO section where Steve Eisemann realizes that Wall Street is creating essentially fake debt just so they can repackage it was an eye opener. I’m generally a free marketeer, but I’m also one of those who believes in punishing fraud fairly harshly and it’s a good lesson for those who tend to have a rather naive view of the efficiency of completely unregulated free markets.

Sounds reasonable, though I would add that I can’t recall a case where the person recording police was physically interfering. Other actors in the criminal justice system need to get on this train!

The optimist in me appreciates SA Ron Dozier dropping the charges. The cynic worries that he did it so they’d still have the law on the books for further use as harassment. The cynic also thinks it’ll be a cold day in hell before the police unions let themselves be legally recorded in Illinois.

Sheriff Joe is power crazed nut case who delights in punishing people for things that aren’t illegal, immoral or weird (like judges who don’t like deputies looking at the notes of the defense attorney). So, whatever the merits or not of the Arizona 3 way+1 dog, common sense says, don’t do it in Maricopa.

The insurance contraceptive mandate controversy is a good example of how Democrats can act just like Republicans when they want. I’ve always known both sides weren’t too far apart so this is good to see.

Anyone remember the Patriot Act? Democrats said it will trample constitutional rights. Republicans said only if you love terrorists! Now, this. Republicans say this mandate tramples constitutional rights. Democrats say only if you hate women!
