It sounds like this alcohol drug would eliminate alcohol addiction the same way naltrexone can (read “the cure for alcoholism” by Eskapa; NOT “the alcoholism and addiction cure”). Except naltrexone blocks it directly at the addiction level (blocking the opioid system) rather than neutralizing the alcohol itself. This drug sounds far more useful! It may encourage more drinking, but it may also reduce the harmfulness of that drinking. If the alcohol is neutralized before it is fully metabolized by the liver, it may not be as damaging to health (I suppose that remains to be studied and depends on the method of neutralization).

Bacon can be harmful? Clearly, we must have a War on Bacon, so that we can wipe this scourge from the planet. Because bacon comes from pigs, we should go ahead and outlaw all porcine products, destroy all pigs, and pressure other nations to do the same. We wouldn’t want people to be tempted to make and eat something that’s not good for them. Fortunately, many nations will be our natural allies in this endeavor. Hopefully, all other nations will come around to the right way of thinking on this.

Mike, maybe not a whole new article, but Radley posted this on Tuesday. BTW, regarding the Court's refusal to hear IJ's licensing case, the whole principle of the rational basis standard is flawed. The onus should always be on the government to prove a law will prevent harm before restricting the citizens' liberty. The notion that it's good enough for politicians to claim they think their law will prevent some harm is hardly a standard at all. (And, regarding strict scrutiny, the government's most compelling interest is in protecting the people's liberty. Anything else in which they claim a compelling interest automatically loses if it jeopardizes that one.)

Another link, a garden variety SWAT-style raid, but this one with lots of pictures of the damage to the house, with a dozen of so windows blown out. One of the residents is a retired Chicago police officer, age 74 (though he wasn’t home at the start).

Alcoholism runs in my family and at times I struggle with problem drinking myself. I wouldn’t mind a pill that could eventually limit my cravings for it without having to give up drinking socially on occasion.
