My only qualm with Arpaio being accused of civil rights abuses now is that it will be played off as a political attack designed to discredit conservatives or somesuch, and that there may very well be some of that intent behind the investigation. Not that it invalidates the accusations, but it may serve to deaden people’s reactions to it…

I think you’re close here, but not quite on.

It won’t be used against people, but in some such campaign that says something along the lines of “Let me be clear. There are those who say that I am hostile towards your civil rights because I signed a bill that enables me to indefinitely detain anyone in the world at any time without charge or counsel, including US CItizens on US soil, on my say so without any evidence whatsoever; but those people re wrong. I threatened to take away funding from a sheriff that has a long history of civil rights violations, and we all know that a removal of federal funds is as good as death!”

Forgive me if I get hung up on that whole “innocent until proven guilty in a court of law” thing.

And, since when did a bunch of self proclaimed libertarians give unquestioned acceptance to a government report on anything?

Google “K-Mart layaway” (without quotes). There are 650 news articles, national and local from all over the country, reporting the super-feel-good holiday story of anonymous K-Mart layaway angels. In marketing, positive media coverage is typically worth much more than advertising. For a modest cost of picking up some layaway balances, K-Mart has created millions of dollars worth of “organic” positive coverage during the holidays. If they did do this, it’s brilliant and well executed.

I’m with the cynics on this one. Something just seems awfully fishy about this rash of anonymous K-Mart charity.

Also, in response to silvermine’s observation that everything is “conveniently” at K-Mart, when our local morning news ran the story today they stated that K-Mart is the only major store that still offers layaway so that’s likely the reason it’s all happening there.

When did conservatives have credit to begin with? Arpaio is just another government thug but he cowers under the illegal immigration banner in order to deflect any accountability what so ever.

They’re finally catching on that they aren’t under the law anymore. They have the guns, who’s going to hold them accountable?
