I was reading a cooking article about real mincemeat pie and how prior to 1950′s, mincemeat pie was really America’s pie of choice and apple pie was a far distant 2nd. The author had done his research and talked about newspaper articles about people who had eaten too much mincemeat pie, had bad dreams/hallucinations and killed or injured various people. However, they still wanted their mincemeat pie!

The author speculated that mincemeat pie required an insane amount of nutmeg which may have been responsible for the bad dreams/hallucinations. He said that after he ate his re-creation of an old-fashioned mincemeat pie, he had weird dreams that night, and he had cravings for more pie.

The problem with trying to use nutmeg to get high is that the lethal dose is quite close to the necessary dose to get high, all those who tried it and lived were very lucky they actually lived thru it. MDA and all its analogs (especially MDMA/XTC) are far more pleasant highs and without all the unpleasant digestive symptoms of nutmeg.

On the other hand, nutmeg is great used sparingly in eggnog and other foods and drinks, and it has anti inflammatory, antiseptic, and bactericide properties as side benefits (yes even in small doses).

@Zeb: Exactly. The one guy I know that did it in high school drank an ungodly amount(30-40g or so.), then when it finally kicked in he screamed, cried, and begged for it to end for about five or six hours. He later compared it to the “high” he got from 1.2 grams of diphenhydramine with the added bonus of explosive diarrhea and projectile vomiting. The doctor at the emergency room was not amused.

These anchors should take the drugs they report on so they know exactly how likely kids are to do it for fun. Whatever happened to investigative journalism?

Some people do use nutmeg as a drug, but I wouldn’t exactly say they were getting HIGH off of it. Nutmeg trips are universally bad trips. I know people who use it habitually, and their lives are such utter crap, I suspect they use nutmeg not to escape their life, but to contrast it, making their every day life look good compared to the nutmeg trip.

That is exactly what I’ve thought every time the subject of salvia comes up. I had a co-worker who summed it up by saying that everybody he knew who tried the stuff ended up pissing themselves, weeping, or both. Not my idea of a Good Time.

I have yet to encounter anyone who has taken hallucinogenic doses of nutmeg more than once. I don’t think that this is much of a problem. Lots of things will get you fucked up, but many of them aren’t much fun.

Not to make fun of your typo, CSP Schofield, but the first time I read your comment I was wondering whether your aunt’s teacher got the runs from your aunt’s cookies. I can see why that would have earned your aunt an F.

My family’s favorite cooking story comes from when my sister was about 12 years old and saw one of those “helpful hints” stories around Valentine’s Day about how you can make a heart-shaped cake if you have a square pan and a circular pan with the proper diameter. So my sister helpfully baked a heart-shaped cake.

Unfortunately, she used granulated sugar for the icing instead of confectioners’ sugar.

I’m a parent and I still don’t understand what is so horrific about my kids getting high. I got high, all my friends got high, hell at one point or another everyone I know has gotten high. I would prefer they used pot or alcohol in a safe location to paint thinner or something else weird.

My father’s sister once made a mistake in Home Ecc, and added a quarter cup of nutMEG instead of a quarter cup of nutMEATS to a batch of cookies. But she didn’t get high. She got a stomach ache (her teacher had a rune; you cooked it, you eat it) and and F on the project.

Nutmeg contains myristicin. Myristicin can be manufactured into MMDA, but not without knowledge of how to do so and the equipment to do it. Simply eating the stuff isn’t going to do much but make you regret that time you ate a bunch of nutmeg to get high.

So what’s the goal for the news? Get the soccer moms riled up to ban everything? They know that’s what’s going to happen.

Lets ban absolutely everything, exempting nothing. That way criminal justice will always exist at the discretion of our beloved law enforcement officers. There will also never be another acquitted criminal.. they’re always guilty!

In the end we’re only a little less free than we are now, but we’re safe right?
