So long as the government has money to give to the DEA and other TLAs who benefit from prohibition, they will fight tooth and claw to maintain the status quo. So, the answer is, whoever brings about the end to bottomless budgets, whether it's actual people or just a collapse.

It is likely that drug profits are or soon will be supporting a small industry of tunnel building equipment.

Soon to be added to the drug paraphernalia list: hammer drills, rope, steel tubing (for rails), pulleys, plywood, 2x4s, bicycle wheels, electric bicycle motors. . . .

Awesome! So… 35 tons of the estimated 20,000 tons of pot smuggled into the US was stopped! Why, that might show up as a fraction of a percent drop in availability for an hour or so! Go feds!

It probably costs smugglers 1/10 to cost to build a tunnel as it does these clowns to find it. And of course, any individual tunnel will likely have a very profitable lifespan when it’s in use prior to being shut down.

It probably takes like… a day to activate a NEW tunnel once a current one is shut down. You KNOW they have more tunnels either under construction or complete and ready to use at any time.

Hey FEDS! Just give up already! You might as well be trying to stop the rain.

How many more stories, exactly like this one, must we sit through before somebody, anybody in the media asks (at the obligatory “victory” press conference) “If you find a bigger and bigger tunnel each time, aren’t you really losing? How much more money, exactly, do you need for “victory”? How many more lives? How many more Labrador Retrievers?

And the big questions nobody in the media ever asks:

Is ANY of this working? Why are we doing this if it is not working? Who, besides the drug barons and the drug warriors, is benefitting from the expensive, violent, counterproductive, endless War on Drugs?

If nobody benefits (except dirty cops & bad guys), why are we forced to pay for it? Who uses force to make us pay for all this mess?

Remember the rum runners of the ’20s? The Coast Guard got faster boats, the rum runners bought even faster ones. They were always one step ahead.

However, what they missed in the ’20s was just ban boats and the fuel. For tunneling we need multinational cooperation to: ban shovels; pickaxes; buckets; wood and concrete. Problem solved.

Oops, forgot wheelbarrows. Must ban wheelbarrows.

The fact that the smugglers keep building these tunnels, and that the have evolved into such an elaborate system, is proof that the tunnels make lots of money. From the smugglers’ point of view, they are a good investment. If they did not make money, nobody would build more of them. Which proves that efforts to stop smuggling are falling further and further behind. No matter how hard they work, the cops can’t rescind the laws of economics.

And how long will it be before they start making false tunnels in order to trap and kill the Feds?

The cartels have shown they have no problem killing police South of the border, what’s to prevent them from escalating.

At the very least, they will start booby trapping the real tunnels in order to destroy evidence/kill cops.
