We’re 32 Tons Closer to Winning the Drug War

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

Feds find elaborate drug smuggling tunnel between Tijuana and San Diego, complete with working rail cars, lighting, and wooden floors. It’s the largest pot bust since . . . uh . . . last year, when they found 45 tons in a different tunnel.

Here’s blustery U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy:

“If you build it, we will find it. And when we find it, we will destroy it.”

And then they’ll build another one. And then you’ll find it. And then you or someone like you will hold another press conference.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

And how long will it be before they start making false tunnels in order to trap and kill the Feds?

The cartels have shown they have no problem killing police South of the border, what’s to prevent them from escalating.

At the very least, they will start booby trapping the real tunnels in order to destroy evidence/kill cops.

The fact that the smugglers keep building these tunnels, and that the have evolved into such an elaborate system, is proof that the tunnels make lots of money. From the smugglers’ point of view, they are a good investment. If they did not make money, nobody would build more of them. Which proves that efforts to stop smuggling are falling further and further behind. No matter how hard they work, the cops can’t rescind the laws of economics.

“And then they’ll build another one. And then you’ll find it. And then you or someone like you will hold another press conference.”

You forgot to add “and all the while, anyone who wants pot in this country will be able to find some for sale rather cheaply…”

So true. What a waste of time and effort.

Apparently, this administration has a fondness for Julius Caesar. First, Hillary with her “We came, we saw, he died” after killing Gaddafi. And, now this.

Remember the rum runners of the ’20s? The Coast Guard got faster boats, the rum runners bought even faster ones. They were always one step ahead.

However, what they missed in the ’20s was just ban boats and the fuel. For tunneling we need multinational cooperation to: ban shovels; pickaxes; buckets; wood and concrete. Problem solved.

Oops, forgot wheelbarrows. Must ban wheelbarrows.

How many more stories, exactly like this one, must we sit through before somebody, anybody in the media asks (at the obligatory “victory” press conference) “If you find a bigger and bigger tunnel each time, aren’t you really losing? How much more money, exactly, do you need for “victory”? How many more lives? How many more Labrador Retrievers?

And the big questions nobody in the media ever asks:

Is ANY of this working? Why are we doing this if it is not working? Who, besides the drug barons and the drug warriors, is benefitting from the expensive, violent, counterproductive, endless War on Drugs?

If nobody benefits (except dirty cops & bad guys), why are we forced to pay for it? Who uses force to make us pay for all this mess?

    Protect & Serve (Themselves!)

The “Feds” like to set up a patsy so they can parade around the next subway bomber or Christmas tree bomber they “caught.” I’m wondering if they bought the Home Depot gift cards the druggies used to build the tunnel.

Awesome! So… 35 tons of the estimated 20,000 tons of pot smuggled into the US was stopped! Why, that might show up as a fraction of a percent drop in availability for an hour or so! Go feds!

It probably costs smugglers 1/10 to cost to build a tunnel as it does these clowns to find it. And of course, any individual tunnel will likely have a very profitable lifespan when it’s in use prior to being shut down.

It probably takes like… a day to activate a NEW tunnel once a current one is shut down. You KNOW they have more tunnels either under construction or complete and ready to use at any time.

Hey FEDS! Just give up already! You might as well be trying to stop the rain.

Even dumber about her false, blustery bravado is that the US consumes more domestically-produced pot than we get from Mexico. These drug warriors must be fatalists or nihilists.

It is likely that drug profits are or soon will be supporting a small industry of tunnel building equipment.

Soon to be added to the drug paraphernalia list: hammer drills, rope, steel tubing (for rails), pulleys, plywood, 2x4s, bicycle wheels, electric bicycle motors. . . .

It’s an upstart cartel that built this tunnel. This was their warning to not miss any protection payments to USG. /yawn

Of course this will go on forever. Who’s gonna stop it?

CyniCAl (#12):Of course this will go on forever. Who’s gonna stop it?

So long as the government has money to give to the DEA and other TLAs who benefit from prohibition, they will fight tooth and claw to maintain the status quo.

So, the answer is, whoever brings about the end to bottomless budgets, whether it’s actual people or just a collapse.

    1. How long did it take them to move that weight through the tunnel? Is this a day’s worth? Or a weeks?

    2. And this is why crappy to okay Mexican brickweed is 20+ bucks an eighth of an ounce.

They were using CFLs!? Shouldn’t we be applauding their eco-consciousness?

I have an honest to goodness GOLD MINE that I cant afford to get cleaned out, in order to start mining the 80 MILLION in gold the oldtimers left behind. I think I’ll tell the feds that theres a cartel tunnel running under it…should be in business in no time. Idiots.

Only the cops, the DA’s, the smugglers, and the dealers win when it comes to drug war. All the rest of us lose.
