That’s all I meant. Did Buddy Holly write rock ‘n roll? Sure, just not that particular song.

Of course, present day, the term “rock” refers mainly to orchestration (electric guitar, massive amplification) and image (long hair, denim, leather, etc.), with the rhythm component being virtually irrelevant. For example, as long ago as the late 1960′s, Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” was upheld as a pioneering “rock” song — Grace Slick said that was ironic because “White Rabbit” is not rock ‘n roll at all.

That would be an interesting test of her (and that of the show producers) tolerant attitude toward rock ‘n roll.

Minor quibble: the only thing rock ‘n roll about Buddy Holly’s performance is the electric Strat. The music is not rock ‘n roll, just basic delta blues.
