The introduction to this Buddy Holly performance on Arthur Murray Dance Party . . .  is simply wonderful.

“Rock and Roll Specialist” is SO going on my business card.

I’m stealing that for the intro of my next mix tape.

I’d like to see how the woman who introduced Buddy Holly would have introduced the Sex Pistols or GG Allin or even Jimi Hendrix. That would be an interesting test of her (and that of the show producers) tolerant attitude toward rock ‘n roll.

Minor quibble: the only thing rock ‘n roll about Buddy Holly’s performance is the electric Strat. The music is not rock ‘n roll, just basic delta blues.

CyniCAl: I have a serious quibble with your quibble.

I doubt that lady could have imagined GG Allin in her worst nightmare.

He does what with his WHAT!!?!?!?! Faints….

Pure cacophony. Won’t last ten years.

In the context of 1957, “rock ‘n roll” meant a specific beat characterized by syncopation. That’s all I meant. Did Buddy Holly write rock ‘n roll? Sure, just not that particular song.

Of course, present day, the term “rock” refers mainly to orchestration (electric guitar, massive amplification) and image (long hair, denim, leather, etc.), with the rhythm component being virtually irrelevant. For example, as long ago as the late 1960’s, Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” was upheld as a pioneering “rock” song — Grace Slick said that was ironic because “White Rabbit” is not rock ‘n roll at all.

Trust me having listened to a lifetime’s worth of Buddy Holly while on car trips in my childhood… WIthout Weezer, this tool would be long forgotten.

Pshaw, I’d sure as hell trade Rivers Cuomo for Holly at this point.
