Perry is not my ideal candidate, by any stretch of the imagination, but then, none of the other choices have struck me as any better (and plenty of them are MUCH MUCH MUCH worse).

Among possible contenders (that is, don't bother naming anyone who has no chance - Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, etc), who would you suggest?

Sorry, close, but no cigar. It is nice to see that unlike most, you at least acknowledge that Perry (or any Texas Gov.) has "but it isn’t something over which Perry has much control." Most people including most Texans do not realize that fact or they ignore it.

As to the Willingham situation, the same tired mantra is foisted out that Perry "replaced" the members of the commission. Sort of true, but it should be noted that their term was over and he was and is totally within his rights to replace them for any reason at all. I have been on several boards and have never felt that my reappointment was automatic for any reason.

Of course conservatives want smaller government. They want it to stop doing anything remotely redemptive so the only stuff left on its plate is the really libertarian stuff like wars, prisons, cops, and prosecutors. Then it can even do all that stuff more efficiently! Well, that's smaller government, of a sort.

I agree Radley, Henson has at least a bit more legitimate defense. In addition Im sure Im preaching to the choir here, we should know that Perry along with 99.9999% of US conservatives don't actually want small government but only the power.
