Where I Was, Where I Am, Where I’ll Be

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Possibly lighter than average blogging for the next week or so. Just left New York City this morning after taping a segment for John Stossel’s show last night. I talked about this column. Should air in a couple weeks. Headed now to Annapolis, Maryland, to give a talk at Cato University. Then headed to D.C., where I’ll be giving my talk on SWAT teams . . . to a roomful of cops.

Also, on the weekend of August 6-7, I’ll be giving the keynote at the Liberty Summer Seminar near Toronto.

It’ll be interesting to hear what the LEO group has to say when faced with all the numerous examples of wrong door raids, dog-shootings and rampant militarization… You could show photos of the dozens of cases you’ve come across and they wouldn’t have a valid argument left.

Maybe they can explain why an armed & dangerous felon like Whitey Bulger gets sane, professional treatment but a family of 5 deserves a kicked in door, automatic weapons and flashbangs at 3AM…

    Good luck!

What Dave said. I mean, I’m sure they’ll let you leave in one piece and all. But props to you (and to a lesser extent them) for making this awkward meeting of the minds and the muscles happen. I’ll be very interested to read or see the result.

Hopefully you will see the FCPD represented in your audience in DC…Lord knows…the Fairfax County residents could benefit greatly…from the FCPD’s participation…in your talk on SWAT teams..

Travel safely…and keep shedding the light.

You’ve more guts than I do.

Given what you have written and the subject material, I’d be very, very uncomfortable in that situation.

Damn! Good luck winning hearts and minds, Radley. And I am being very sincere about that.

I think I am a bit more optimistic than some of the other commenters about your chances of reaching out to the law enforcement community. Too often, LEO’s live and work in an insular environment. Surrounded by cops at work, fed pro-police propaganda all day long, socializing with other cops after work, etc. My dad was a police officer and though he did socialize with some officers, he had his own life off the job. Being a police officer was his job, not his life. It did not make up his entire identity. Consequently, he never viewed police work as uncritically as many of the FOP stooges and apologists for overly aggressive policing that we hear about on The Agitator.

Radley, you are an excellen communicator. Though your message sounds radical, you have the data to back it up. I hope you message gets through to at least some of the LEO’s you speak to, because that is the way things will change in this country.
