Five-Star Fridays: The Agitator Mix #1
Friday, June 17th, 2011In summers past, we’ve come up with a theme for Five-Star Friday selections. This year, I think we’ll do an Agitator Playlist. Please note: I am not suggesting that any of these artists are Hayek-reading, Friedman-loving libertarians. Only that the songs themselves echo themes that will be familiar to readers of this site. Actually, some of the songs will be familiar, too. I’ve posted many of them before. Feel free to make your own suggestions in the comments.
We’ll start with the great, guitar-driven Los Lobos tune, “Road to Gila Bend”, a sympathetic look at an illegal immigrant’s harrowing journey across the border.
If you’re interested, I interviewed Los Lobos’ Louie Perez about this song and the album its from for Reason a few years ago. Here’s the original, sans video:
Here’s a cool acoustic version of the same song:

If by any chance there are others who like anarcho-punk, I could be persuaded to link to and do translations of the lyrics of some Danish bands ^_^
I like it. Sounds like Neil Young. Except in tune.
Rush has a number of good libertarian-themed songs, especially this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWHEcIbhDiw
“Judge Rules Red-Light Camera Election ‘Invalid’”

Rune: I’d be interested, translations or no. You no doubt know this, but Freetown Christiania also is an excellent example of spontaneous order that develops without a coercive state. For those Agitatortots who don’t know it, it’s worth five minutes reading the Wikipedia page.
Ton Steine Scherben (German band from the 70s) is my music suggestion.

**No power for no one!**
I’m not free, I can only vote
for which thieves should rob me, and which murderers should command me.
I’ve bled to death a thousand times, and they forgot me.
I’ve starved a thousand time, and they stuffed themselves.
In the south, the east, the west, and the north
Everywhere, it’s the same people who murder us
In every city, in every country
paint the slogan on the wall.
Paint the slogan on the wall!
No power for no one!
No power for no one!
Let us tear down the walls that separate us.
Come together people, and get to know each other.
You’re no better than the man next to you.
No man has the right to rule over humans.
In the south, the east, the north, and the west
Everywhere, it’s the same people who extort us
In every city, in every country
call out our rallying cry!
Call out our rallying cry!
No power for no one!
No power for no one!
Come over, brother, and join our ranks
Come over, sister, you are not alone
Come over, mother, we are on your side
Come over, father, we want the same
In Augburg, Munich, Frankfurt, and Saarbrücken
Everywhere, it’s the same people who oppress us
In every city, in every country
raise your fist into the air!
Raise your fist into the air!
No power for no one!
No power for no one!
Radley, if you’re not already familiar with this tune, I’ll be quite surprised. I think the Foo Fighters made this video after reading your blog too much. And the lyrics definitely fit. (Fuck yes!)

§119 in the Danish Criminal Code is “violence against a public servant”, which carries tougher minimum sentences than violence against one of the governed classes.
Paragraf 119 – Registreret
Translation:
Title: Registered
(speak: What’s your name? What’s your date of birth?)
They know who you are but you don’t know them
Your life is their job, they are officials of the state
They know who your friends are and everybody you have met
You have been under surveillance from the day you were born
All the shit you have done in your life
Have been put into a fucking archive
You are a part of the system; they know where they have you
And if you break free, then they’ll come and get you!
Do you believe control helps you? No it fucking doesn’t!
Do you think they care about you? No they fucking don’t!
:You are a file in their computer archives!:
How long are you going to let them register your life?
Do you believe control helps you? No it fucking doesn’t!
Do you think they care about you? No they fucking don’t!
If you believe you live in a state of law
You are either a cop or dumb as snot
The ones who think for themselves: demonstrators and activists
They all end up in the archives of the state
You say, there are rules limiting to how far they are allowed to go
But it’s them who makes the rules, you have got to understand this
The registry laws don’t work for shit
Nothing is deleted once it gets in there
Do you think they care about you? No they fucking don’t!
You are a file in their computer archive
You are a file in their computer archive
You are a file in their fucking archive
You are a file in their computer archive
How long are you going to let them register your life?
Paragraf 119 Nul Tolerence
Translation:
Title: Zero Tolerance
:Zero tolerance to the Danish police! PIGS!:
The police has been sent to the streets to fight
The enemy must be fought and the enemy is us
Peaceful demonstrators are beaten without mercy
Your form of justice is a fucking enigma
:Zero tolerance to the Danish police! PIGS!:
You blindly follow orders from the systems rotten top
but your eyes tell that you love your job
Beat on children! Beat on the weak
Because it’s best when they don’t hit back
The days are past when you could do as you please
Fuck you pigs, we won’t turn the other cheek
Take that as a threat, because that is what it is
Take one of ours and we’ll take ten of you
:No justice! No peace!
Before the last cop lies dead!:
Fuck you! Fuck you! Fucking pigs!
How about a drink? Here’s a bottle full of gasoline!
Begone! Get the fuck out! We’ll reclaim the streets
And we’ll get vengeance for every single cop-baton stroke!
You better retire before you get chronic injuries
Because our pension for you are flying cobblestones!
Eat your own damn medicine
Zero tolerance to the Danish police pigs!
Zero tolerance to the Danish police! Pigs!

Rune: Many thanks! I’m always glad to find new bands to put on my iPod.
