Puppycide
Friday, May 20th, 2011This video shows just how perfunctory these dog shootings can be. The cops don’t give the thing a second thought. Here’s the story:
Officers were looking for Pete Moses and Vania Sisk. According to search warrants, Moses is a suspect in the disappearance of a woman and a 5-year-old boy. Sisk is the boy’s mother.
While they’ve not been charged in the disappearances, the SWAT team arrested the pair on other charges at the Dunstan Avenue home after surrounding it the evening of April 12.
After the people in the home surrendered, the SWAT team approached to make sure no one else was inside. As ABC11 cameras recorded, the lead officer went up the front steps and then turned and fired at a dog three times – killing it.
The dog doesn’t appear to be vicious and doesn’t appear to lunge at officers. In the video, you can see a man sitting on the stoop of a home next door and others standing on the next porch as the three high-powered rounds were fired in their direction.
The bystanders were not hurt.
Eighteen-year-old Deshawn Porter told ABC11 the dog – a lab named Sheba – was his best friend.
“I didn’t know what to say,” he said. “My neighbor says they shot my dog several times.”
Porter said he asked police why the dog was killed.
“He said the dog was getting vicious and ready to attack,” said Porter.
But that’s not how others saw it. ABC11 asked the Durham Police Department about the incident. It said the officers were making a high-risk entry and the dog appeared to growl and make aggressive moves . . .
After the standoff, he said police did not apologize and took his dog’s body with them when they left the scene. He doesn’t know what was done with it.
ABC11 offered to show Durham police officials the video and to also ask if it was appropriate to discharge an automatic weapon so close to innocent civilians. They declined.
Sheer callousness. They have no interest in viewing the video? It’s not even possible that the cops could have been out of line? The Durham SWAT team, by the way, is the same squad that gave us this delightful image:
TheAgitator.com

So sad, the dog didn’t appear to do anything aggressive.
What an asshole.
Absolutely disgusting. He barely even broke stride.
It amazes me that people are still surprised by this kind of behavior by armed forces unfettered by civilian control. It’s the same kind of abuse perpetrated by lawless armies, militias and gangs in conflicts throughout history and around the world.
Well you have to understand, it’s a pain in the ass to have to deal with the paper/legwork to place the dog in another home, much easier just to kill it.
I have to be sarcastic or I’m going to have an aneurysm…
Looks like these trigger happy cops are taking a page out of Team Six’s book. The only difference is that instead of a insane mass murder they’re killing a friendly dog. Aren’t there better things to take target practice on: http://lawblog.legalmatch.com/2011/05/17/note-to-omar-bin-laden-no-wrongful-death-lawsuit-for-osama-bin-laden/
Maybe that worthless cop thought he might trip *again* going up the stairs. Or maybe he’ll write in his report that he tripped (never mind it’s 3 steps earlier) and “heard a shot” as he was trying to recover, and then the dog was dead.
This is really infuriating. I’ve had to delete about 7 expletives in this response so far.
In a semi-related thing, I got pretty ticked off at a police officer I saw wearing a t-shirt the other day. Apparently there are tons of pro-cop t-shirts around made by departments for different squads. But this one had “The Thin Blue Line” and then the famous quote by Winston Churchill about the British pilots in the Battle of Britain: “Never has so much been owed by so many to so few”. The combination of military wanna-be, smug self-importance, and irritating self-aggrandizement drove me up the wall.
That SWAT officer seems to be staring at that kid’s package. Doesn’t that make him a pedo? Or is he just jealous that the kid is over-compensating?
horrible. are the cops becoming more brazen and callous because they’re more powerful or are we just more aware because of media/social networks? this shit grinds me down.
HAPPY FRIDAY!
You’ll notice also the guy fired the weapon in select fire mode, with a burst of 3 rounds. The same slog that tripped on the steps a few seconds earlier. It sure looked to me like he had that finger on the trigger the whole time.
Yup, these are the unaccountable professionals we need toting automatic weapons on our streets.
Jesus Christ. I make it a rule not to cry before 5pm. Just broke my rule.
There are non-participants within 20 feet of this bufungaloo! 50 cops standing around burning OT and nobody thinks to clear the neighbors?
Why is that dog even there? Not one of these noobs has been trained to have a freakin’ treat and attempt to call him over first? If you’re worried about surprise, or being attacked you don’t leave a dog loose on a porch.
Hi, this is our SWAT team. They were trained by some ‘shroomed out 14 year-olds down at the local Weekend at Barney Fife’s Memorial Paintball Field. Consummate professionals, all of them.
The entire scene is tactically reminiscent of the last time I saw a bunch of
caffeinated kindergarten kids turned loose with super soakers.
W… T… F
“Screw the facts, we’re right!”
Screw you, Durham. First you blight the world with the presence of Duke University, and now this.
If the cops had missed the dog and shot the guy siting next door instead, and internal police investigation would have found that the guy was active aggressively and making threatening moves and the cop acted within department policy by shooting him. A paid vacation and commendation would naturally be provided.
Typical pigs.
Cops routinely shoot these animals in order to inflict emotional pain on the suspects they are dealing with at that moment. For most cops, the suspect is already guilty, so killing any beloved pets is fun because it hurts the suspect.
Police wonder why more and more people are losing respect for those wearing a badge. Look in the mirror, LEO’s.
I wish those cops had a conscience.
Because anyone with a conscience would be tormented every day and night for years by the thought of what they had done.
These brutal cops have to live somewhere. I am sure that they have wives, children and pets themselves. Maybe someone should take a high-powered hunting rifle or a shotgun and blow away one of these cops’ pets, when they are off-duty at home and least expect it. Maybe a taste of their own medicine is what they need.
If the guy they arrested is guilty of what he is accused of (the cold blooded murder of a 5 year old, plus the ordering of another murder) then I will be the first to agree that giving him a three round burst from an MP5 is justice. But why did they have to shoot the dog?
That’s what scares me above all other things. If the cops screw up and hit my door, my dog is dead. If they drag me out a deep sleep, I’ll likely end up dead too. This has to end.
Jesus, is it sad that I’m starting to think we could fill a damn Bingo card.
- “Stop resisting!”
- Initiation of contact with insulting/condescending statement
- “It made an aggressive move.”
- “I feared for my life.”
* Charge of resisting arrest. (Free square)
- “Did not immediately comply with orders.”
- Warrantless entry due to mistaken address
- Warrantless entry “close enough” to listed address
- Use of tazer for intimidation/punishment
Etc..
Of course it is, but the bigger point is that is doesn’t matter. They’re cops. They are exactly the same as all the other cops you’ve heard about in totalitarian police states throughout history. Just like soldiers who become addicted to the adrenaline rush of a firefight, they are totally oblivious to the utter callousness of their behavior towards the locals. They have guns and permission to behave as they please. So why should they be concerned? If you’re not another cop, you belong to an inferior race and will be treated accordingly.
So, they had a warrant for two people. Those people came out and were arrested. They wanted to “make sure no one else was inside”… why, exactly? What authority did they have to enter the home, when they had already arrested the two people for whom they had warrants?
This is a prime example of why I don’t get chosen for jury duty anymore. Because I have to tell the court that I basically don’t consider LEOs credible witnesses.
Always good when the local news coverage makes Radley’s site. I have to say though, good for ABC11 for showing the footage. I’m guessing there were empty suits and armed thugs alike strenuously objecting to its release (after likely begging their deferential news lackeys to show up with cameras rolling in the first place).
#22 – Interesting question. Kinda’ makes it fun to put it all together. So the cops:
* Entered a private home without a warrant (since they’d completed the scope of the initial one)…
* Shot and killed a dog that was demonstrably non-aggressive…
* With innocent bystanders as a back-drop.
But they don’t see any reason to review the tapes.
There is no such thing as a good cop. They are all bad.
“Coward” is the first word that comes to mind.
@ Anthony
I wouldn’t call the cop a ‘coward’ – there was no threat to be afraid of.
I think it is just pure sadistic meanness. This cop makes Michael Vick look like the ASPCA.
Shaming the Durham SWAT team = farting in the wind
But better out than in, as Shrek said.
Don’t worry, the Durham SWAT team is a highly trained and professional group! They would never just stand around playing with their guns, perhaps even accidentally shooting themselves…
http://www.wral.com/golo/blogpost/7889470/
Or… perhaps they would.
The best part is that there was no actual bomb. It was just some pieces of foam by the side of the road. Of course, they don’t just roll Bomb Squad, they roll SWAT too, who apparently just point guns randomly and pose during these events.

You can tell them whatever you want.
Although I’ll grant that it’s rather harder for the common folk to lie through their teeth without missing a beat, simply because we don’t do it as our day job.
Once more, with extreme prejudice:
Protect & Serve (Themselves!)
There in an epidemic, around the country, of police shooting dogs and getting away with murder. Please post this, when you can. These are police dashcams of a Newfoundland, found outside, not vicious, who was driven by police off her own property and gunned down in a neighbors enclosed yard 4 times, while she cowered in bushes. Not one kill shot was made. All were to her spine and legs. Afterwards you can hear the police yell “NICE” in the audio. I am wondering when this is going to get national attention???? The policemen lied to witnesses during their safari hunt telling people she was dangerous and tried to attack several people. Rosie never did. :(

I like the inclusion of the Humane Society spokesman. She offers to provide training to the police. Which is nice in and of itself, but let’s just perform a little thought experiment. What if that video had not been of a paramilitary commando shooting a dog, but of a trailer park resident shooting his own dog. How many charges would have been filed against the trailer-park redneck? At least a couple of felonies and a couple of misdemeanors… yet there’s not a whiff of “he should be charged with animal cruelty”. Even the PETA crowd knows better than to question the police too much.

Wow, that’s a fantastic link. I wonder what they were supposed to be doing? They really do look like they are just posing for “action photos” with their buddies. 3 guys stacked up like that isn’t a very good tactical formation.
Not long before these pre-judicial / extra-judicial punishments are dished out to humans on a regular basis.
We already see it from time to time, but soon it will be SOP. Hurray for the “good guys”.
If one hurts or kills a cop’s dog, he is charged with assault to an ‘officer of the law’. By definition, all ‘officers’ are equal. That infers that a dog is equal to a human. Therefore, if a cop shoots a dog, he is guilty of murder, same as if it were an actual human being. If not, then a cop’s dog is not an officer, and killing it is not a crime. They cannot have it both ways.
Hahahahaha
Oh yes they can. There is one set of rules for us, the ruled, and another set for the rulers and their agents.
Hi,
Another innocent dog was gunned down last week by the Erie, CO police. The officer shot beautiful Ava in the back as she was walking towards her owner and the 3 little girls who loved her. The website is http://www.facebook.com/justiceforava
There is also a petition to sign as well as a Memorial dog walk and protest scheduled for tomorrow morning, May 21, 2011 in Erie, CO. Please help us get the word out.
Thanks!
Two quotes from decent American thinkers apply here…
First, Thoreau:
“The mass of men serve the state thus, not as men mainly, but as machines, with their bodies. They are the standing army, and the militia, jailers, constables, posse comitatus, etc. In most cases there is no free exercise whatever of the judgment or of the moral sense; but they put themselves on a level with wood and earth and stones; and wooden men can perhaps be manufactured that will serve the purpose as well. Such command no more respect than men of straw or a lump of dirt.”
And Mencken:
“Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats.”
These despicable cunts don’t wear kevlar at home. Their addresses can be had for pennies. Or set up a 4-man crossfire enfilade with 50cals and then lure them in and tear them to fucking shreds.
Hoist the fucking black flag, someone.
(Apologies to vaginas everywhere for taking their name in vain; I deplore that almost all genuinely acid insults – in most languages – refer either to female genitals or to mothers [éspèce de con and fils de pute; conio and ihjo de puta; cunt and son of a whore; job tvojemaj {'go home and fuck your mother'}])
amy “I am wondering when this is going to get national attention????”
It won’t. Objecting to police misconduct is still very much taboo in America. They are pure heros and damn anything that shows otherwise. The local and national media simply won’t touch it, except in rare cases and then it is treated as an aberration and not the norm. It would end in a minute if the media would get outraged and cover it like Radley does but they won’t do that.
@AMY #33
Wow that was a disgusting video to watch. Every one should watch the video so it goes viral, sign the petition, and join the Justice for Rosie facebook page.
The state likes the job the police are doing. Remember that.
@17 “Because anyone with a conscience would be tormented every day and night for years by the thought of what they had done.”
You are correct. 20 some years ago we had a dog who had cancer, we were broke and couldn’t afford treatment (which was not readily available then for dogs, anyway) nor even for the cost of euthanasia, he was suffering horribly so my hubby took him out to the woods and shot him, once, at close range, in the head, killing him instantly. He still frequently wakes in the night crying over that memory, and he loved that dog. It doesn’t matter that it was, in that case, a mercy killing, likely the kindest thing he could have done for the dog outside of having the vet put him to sleep. it brings tears to my eyes just writing about it.
This lack of concern for people’s pets by so many cops just makes me seethe with anger and disgust. Wonder how these cops who kill the dogs of “suspects” with such abandon would feel if someone walked up and shot their pet(s) for no reason. On second thought, any cop who could shoot a dog like that obviously doesn’t have enough love in his heart for a pet, especially not enough love to give to a dog.
“On second thought, any cop who could shoot a dog like that obviously doesn’t have enough love in his heart for a pet, especially not enough love to give to a dog.”
I wouldn’t be too sure about that. If there’s one thing even the dumbest, meanest people are good at, it’s compartmentalizing their attitudes towards other living beings.
Morally, I wouldn’t recommend killing a puppycidal cop’s pets though. The pets didn’t do anything to hurt anyone. Better to take it out (to whatever degree justified) on the guilty – the cop himself. (As a practical matter, I don’t recommend doing that either).
I saw a really disturbing video on “Netflix” yesterday by Naomi Watts called “End of America”.
I’m not a conspiracy theorist? But this shit was scary. That there is somehow a conspiracy afoot to train police to be casual killers is almost inescapable. The methods diabolically effective. There almost has to be some king of criminal mastermind or “Secret Society” grade think tank in charge.
The video only broached on the police aspect, focusing mostly on Blackwater (Now Xe) in it’s military role. But Xe is now a major trainer of SWAT teams all over the Midwest. How the fuck did this happen? What rational person thinks it’s a good idea to have PARAMILITARY MERCENARIES train police officers? Of what possible use is busting in a door and being trained to kill anything that so much as blinks of use in civilian law enforcement?
Did Police Chiefs all over get together and say “Wow! We need to assemble an army and get us some military training, that way we can REALLY fuck up the serfs when we invade their homes!
No, they did not. And I refuse to believe that they did. What I have thought unthinkable, but is now starting to look like the only remaining possibility, is that federal policy created perverse incentives for police departments to form SWAT teams as a diabolical way of getting groups like Xe in to train them in assault tactics to create a huge surge (Under the mask of the drug war) to covertly convert the police from “peace officers” to an army of totalitarian state oppression.
It’s not hard, you got a bunch of gung ho, military wanna bees anyway, giving them more guns and saying it’s ok to play soldier is like offering candy to children. They’re gunna take it. The same with offering resources to politicians to make the necessary policy changes to support the paramilitary police transition. They’ll take the money and then justify it anyway they can.
For example: The Missouri Highway Patrol has SWAT teams. What the fuck does the Missouri Highway Patrol need SWAT teams for? Roadside Hostage situations? No. And I seriously doubt that the people in charge of the Missouri Highway Patrol got together one day and said “Hey! I’m sick of all these Roadside Hostage problems! We need SWAT teams to better protect the highways of this fine state!”
No. I’m sure that outside agencies made offers too good to ignore, then suggested that they could ‘help’ their lesser equipped rural brothers with their drug war problems now that they have SWAT teams. Effectively removing any accountability for the drug war from local police AND as a bonus, making anyone who WOULD insist on accountability afraid to do so out of fear of reprisal from what is effectively a state run mercenary squad.
@ BOB #45
HA HA, Naomi Watts! The star of King Kong. I would be a wonderful thing if an actress as beautiful as her would do a film like The End of America.
It’s Naiomi Wolf who did that film and I highly recommend it as well.
Speaking of Naiomis, you should check out the book “The Shock Doctrine” by Naiomi Klein.
Speaking of Naiomis, you should check out the book “The Shock Doctrine” by Naiomi Klein.
No, you really shouldn’t.
Unless you’re looking for an example of how facts, truth, and accuracy no longer matter so long as you have a provocative premise.
Yeah! It was Wolf. Sorry, I wouldn’t know Naomi Watts from Naomi Wolf from some other random person named Naomi. I guess I had heard of Watts and just channeled the name. The messenger didn’t matter, just parts of the message.
I’m not a conspiracy theorist, I don’t see hidden agendas everywhere. I think the vast, vast majority of people are simply semi-rational agents pursuing their own self interests and would be appalled to be part of some kind of greater conspiracy.
But there is a confluence of events that point to a directed influence in the militarization of the police. I don’t, for example, think that “SWAT” teams are the intentional construct of some evil force, It seems reasonable that Gates developed the system with generally good intentions. (I expect that could argued, but I seriously doubt he was thinking “Take over America with my Paramilitary army! Bu hu wa Ha Ha HA!”
But I do think, that at the Federal level, a consistent force has applied, across Presidents and across whichever political ideology is in control at the time, a policy shift towards totalitarianism. It sounds insane, but the consistency over time is just too suspicious looking.
@ Radley
Though I realize that her views on economics might be at odds with your Friedmanite beliefs but I think her chapters on the psychological “shock doctrine” involved in torture and its use in instilling fear into a society, for one reason or another, is pertinent to Bob’s interest in “the End of America.”
So for that reason, Bob you might want to check it out. I really respect Radley but don’t take his glib advice on this one.
Have you ever read “Confession of an Economic Hit Man”?
These are nothing but criminal thugs enjoying terrorizing and killing living things. People should be arming themselves and defend their liberties from these hooligans disguised as law enforcement. Someone needs to track down the location of this bastard, unto him what he does to others. We need vigilante heros willing to stalk and torment these bastards until they learn their lesson. They’re pure evil.
Most of our police are RETURNING MILITARY, trained to KILL and SWAT teams are all about the Phoney War on Some Drugs. Are we scared yet?
It’s all designed to put us in our place, AFTER they take our guns away.
Then we can be REAL slaves, not just slave wannabees.
IMPEACH OBOMBA
I’m not an “Activist” of any sort and have never had more than a single speeding ticket in 40 years. All off my life I always gave the benefit of the doubt to the police (probably my upbringing), but not any more. Every single day there are 20-50 stories across the nation about the gross abuses (including rape and murder) by law enforcement. Thousands of cases a year (and that’s only the ones that are caught). I no longer trust the police or justice system. They’ve topped the bell-curve and now they’re mostly corrupt and cover/lie for each other. I don’t cheer when a cop gets hurt or killed, but I simply don’t care about them any more. I’ll never call the police, I’ll never talk to the police, I’ll never be friendly with the police, I’ll never trust the police. If one comes to my door, I won’t answer. If one ever pounds on my door or tries to force entry, he’ll be found on my doorstep in the same fashion that dog was.
Legitimate police are required to conduct any searches in a reasonable manner to avoid causing unnecessary damage or harm to persons and property. The Supreme Law of the Land so decrees. Searches not conducted in such fashion are illegitimate. Persons who illegitimately break into an occupied dwelling, for the purpose of accosting the occupants therein, are robbers and should be referred to as such. If they’re government employees, then they should be referred to as government sponsored robbers.
The problem in this country isn’t one of legitimate cops acting badly, but rather one of government-sponsored robbers who are attacking citizens. The term “cop” implies a level of legitimacy that is in many cases really not appropriate.
what about something similar to the ubiquitous sex offender lists for brutish, thuggish LEOs? something that would signal to a wide audience “beware of Officer Smith, badge #666,” nothing libelous, just verifiable accounts of jackbooted goonsquad behavior attributed to a person, not just anonymous aggression hiding behind a costume.
I got a taste of police overreach in South Carolina when my wife was pulled over by a state trooper for a tinted license plate cover, and was then falsely arrested for DUI because the trooper said he smelled alcohol. He even threatened to tase her if she did not cooperate, which I consider rather cowardly of the cop as my wife weighs 120 pounds soaking wet. She was cuffed and hauled off to a back room of the city jail where she blew a zero on the breathalyzer and finally released. My 9 year old son and I had to wait in the lobby and a Rock Hill city policeman made a brief appearance to tell me to quit bothering his staff, which apparently must be against the law even though he could not cite one when I told him to consider me as a member of the public, a taxpaying one at that. I obtained copies of the state patrol dashcam videos and posted them on Youtube at http://www.youtube.com/user/kromburner?feature=mhee. I filed complaints with the state and US DOJ, citing Article 18 Section 242 of the US Code (Deprivation of Rights under Color of Law). No response from SC. Feds say they’re not authorized to prosecute individual cases. No lawyer will take the case on contingency because they say there were no damages. Any time a family member is cuffed and hauled off to jail, there are damages. The whole episode is on their own videos, which is irrefutable evidence that this cop was on a fishing trip and stated twice that he smelled alcohol when there was none to smell. Yet there is no internal investigation by SLED and not even as much as an apology. Implied consent laws are used to nullify 4th Amendment rights of licensed drivers, so if you are driving a car you can be arrested any time a cop has a whim to do so, no evidence needed. I managed to get the towing fee reimbursed, and the state I guess considers that as case closed. I don’t. Our new Tea Party Darling governor Nikki Haley hasn’t responded to a complaint I sent to her. The SC Highway Patrol was subject of a federal investigation in 2008 which resulted in the resignations of the head of the Highway Patrol and the Dept. of Public Safety. The SCHP, SCDPS, and SLED will not talk to me because I’m not a party to the action. The hell I ain’t. The least I can do is post the video on SC tourism and commerce websites and maybe it will save some unsuspecting motorist from out of state from being subjected to the imperial authority of the state of South Carolina.
A friend of mine did get even with a neighborhood cop that hurt his dog. When Mrs Cop left to play bridge, my friend found a way into her house & shot FIFI with a borrowed revolver. For the next 5 mornings, the deputy gave my friend a ticket & tried to get him to do something stupid. A judge warned the cop to never make contact with my friend again or he would file harassment charges against the cop. By the way, that was not in our city.

There is something seriously wrong with the “officer” who shot this dog without even blinking. In my opinion, this guy and so many more like him are nothing more than sociopaths who hide behind a badge. Read Radley Balko’s report titled ‘OVERKILL: The Rise of Paramilitary Police Raids in America’. It will open your eyes to the fact that the militarization of law enforcement in America is out of control, and getting worse. The fact that many in law enforcement actually fully support the increasing use of military tactics and weapons on the people is disturbing. This practice must be brought under control now. Wake up now – or wake up too late in a police state. If you think that’s just hysteria – keep kidding yourself.
That cop should be executed.
It seems at times the laws don’t apply to certain individuals. Here is an example. A couple of years ago a North Carolina police officer was RECORDED discussing downloading music for free. The officer named the name Kazaa which has appeared in numerous lawsuits and talked about how the songs were arranged in groups and you choose the songs and just click and get them. He said it was the thing to do everybody was doing it. He bet his daughters had downloaded a THOUSAND SONGS on his computer. He said he had to get a new computer his old one FILLED UP WITH MEMORY. He laughed and said he hoped the federal government did not come in and investigate him.
Shortly after this conversation we began reading the news articles people were being sued by RIAA and the FBI. They were calling piracy a crime of stealing and calling these people thieves. The RIAA and the FBI on their websites encourage people to report piracy. The FBI Anti Piracy Warning says they investigate. At that time we reported the officer’s conversation as well as his name to the RIAA and the FBI. It was ignored. A few months ago we were still reading news article people still being sued. Three of these cases that stood out were Joel Tennenbaum, Jammie Thomas and Whitney Harper all having to pay outrageous monetary amounts. Now feeling ignoring the officer’s conversation was unfair we began reporting the conversation to the RIAA the FBI the PD and several other anti piracy organizations along with the officer’s name asking why this was not investigated. Again it continues to be ignored. If piracy is a crime as the FBI the RIAA and others proclaim why was this conversation ignored. Considering piracy is being called a crime and the thousands of people that have been sued shouldn’t this conversation be investigated to see where the THOUSAND SONGS this officer talks about came from, who the everybody is that is doing this and if he or his daughters may have committed what RIAA, FBI and others are calling a crime. Ignoring this conversation seems to be an injustice to all the people that have been sued as well as to us as a citizen reporting it and it being ignored. How can they sue some and ignore a high ranking police officer discussing downloading music in this way. I feel this is wrong and don’t understand how this is allowed.
