I Get Email

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

From my inbox:

If you’re not just another pot-smoking Republican, how come you only do interviews with Paultards like Stossel and “the Judge”, and some Russian show nobody has ever heard of?

Because they ask. If MSNBC, CNN, or whatever other network you’d like to name wanted me to come on to talk about the issues I cover, I’d be happy to do it. Stossel, Napolitano, and Alyona Minkovski happen to have an interest in the criminal justice system, and probably more importantly, in my perspective on it. Other networks and their hosts don’t. No conspiracies. No secret right-wing, Koch family string-pulling. It really is that simple.

It’s also funny that your occasional TV appearances are supposed to reveal how you “really” think, instead of, say, the work you do every single day in mediums that allow you to actually present a complex idea or two. If there’s any beef here, it’s that intelligent people should stay as far away from any TV news as possible.

I’m trying to guess the correspondent. The few Team Blue posters here are generally more articulate. (I’m assuming the writer is Team Blue from the “Pot Smoking Republican” epithet)

  3. #3 |  Mattocracy |

If you’re not just some political hack who makes outrageous accusations without first doing an ounce of research, how come you send emails making youself look like a child.

  4. #4 |  Andrew S. |

You know you’re doing something right when Team Blue thinks you’re just another member of Team Red, and Team Red thinks you’re just another member of Team Blue.

  5. #5 |  Boyd Durkin |

NEVER ever ever stop posting these emails you get. Precious.

As for “pot-smoker” reference, are that many Republicans smoking pot? Really?

…just another 400 lb marathoner watching Amish porn.

I hear there is an opening at MSNBC now.

  7. #7 |  Pete |

I gotta say, branding these features “I Get Email” was a great decision. Every time I see a new article titled “I Get Email” I go “oh boy, here we go” and I am never disappointed.

I can picture Balko and Nancy Grace now. It isn’t a pretty picture, then again no picture of Nancy Grace is.

Anyone else remember that Red vs. Blue Halo spinoff series…

I’m convinced that US politics is more like it than I care to imagine.

Hey! Is “Koch Family” pronounced “Coke” or “Cock”? I wanna giggle like a 12 year old every time I see the name, but I want to be sure the giggling is appropriate.

What? Don’t tell me you don’t do that too.

  11. #11 |  Joshgeek |

If there’s anything this world needs more of, IMHO, it’s pot smoking republicans.

  12. #12 |  ClubMedSux |

Just out of curiosity, who DOES watch Russia TV? While I enjoy Alyona’s show, I would have never heard of it if I didn’t subscribe to the reason.tv podcast. I’m just curious if it sees itself as a network for Americans and other English-speakers in Russia or as an alternative to the major networks here in the States.

  13. #13 |  ClubMedSux |

Never mind, I should’ve gone straight to Wikipedia. It’s a shame we don’t have more hosts like her on U.S. television.

  14. #14 |  Bad Medicine |

And an ad for Pajama Jeans next to the comments…. priceless…

Radley Balko is obviously a privileged white male crypto-Republican — that’s why he’s spent so much of his life trying to free Corey Maye. It all makes sense if you spend enough time reading the Huffington Post.

  16. #16 |  PeeDub |

The question would make *some* sense if you went on “righty” networks as a proponent for “righty” viewpoints, but you’re usually on these networks representing typically “non-righty” issues. Does not compute, really.

  17. #17 |  Mario |

You have a lot of patience to even answer the e-mail of someone who uses the term *Paultard.*

“What? Don’t tell me you don’t do that too.”

I do. When i first read “Koch family string-pulling”, i thought it would be funnier with “family string” removed. It was an interesting visual for about a minute.

Radley is actually pretty lucky with his emails. I usually just get the “add 4 inches to your penis” emails. I wish my ex-gf’s would stop sending those.

    The_Chef:
That’s the first thing I thought of when I read the comment about Team Red and Team Blue. They appear to be on different sides then in season 3 or 4 it turns out that they’re on the same side. Very much like American politics.

  21. #21 |  Null Void |

Libertarians are seen as pot-smoking Republicans by the Democrats, Republicans see us as liberals who are ruining things with our childish shit. As far as Koch being right-wing, I cannot think of too many right-wingers who support the ACLU and abortion rights.

Besides, even as a libertarian, I have little tolerance for Paulians.

  22. #22 |  auggie |

We get RTV on colorado public television.

That’s gotta be Reasons favorite troll……Sheik….err….I mean Shrike.

  24. #24 |  RomanCandle |

I think Radley does the Russian show for the babes.

Actually, I bet that’s why he does Stossel’s show too. How can any woman resist that Tom Selleck moustache? /rhetorical

  25. #25 |  delta |

I have met pot-smoking Republicans, and it’s way not cool.

  26. #26 |  Nick |

Radley’s rhetorical question is answered by Dr. Anarchy.

“Hey! Is “Koch Family” pronounced “Coke” or “Cock”? ”

At least here in Brazil we speak “Coch”. I always think about something related to “Coal” when I see someone saying “Coke Brothers”.

  28. #28 |  Steamed McQueen |

RTV is nothing more than an English-language propaganda outlet for Russia. Their only interest in the criminal justice system is to show just how barbaric we Americans can be.

Little, if anything is mentioned of the atrocities Russia commits on her own people on a nearly-daily basis.

Russia has almost zero in the way of independent media. TV, radio and print is controlled by the Kremlin.

http://larussophobe.wordpress.com/ This will give a more accurate view as to what Russia is really up to these days.

“If you’re not just another pot-smoking Republican, how come you only do interviews with Paultards like Stossel and “the Judge”, and some Russian show nobody has ever heard of?”

Is it because none of the pinko ass hats on team Dem actually give a shit about civil liberties?

  30. #30 |  Bob |

So… basically… you guys can’t figure out if it’s “Coke” or “Cock” either.

    And:

RTV is nothing more than an English-language propaganda outlet for Russia. Their only interest in the criminal justice system is to show just how barbaric we Americans can be.

I’m good with that. It’s all part of transparency.

I really really despise the leftwing smear against the Koch brothers. As if simply funding ideological endeavors is something distasteful. And even if Satan himself was funding Radley’s work, we should be grateful, right? Isn’t that what matters? I guess not, as that retarded idiot Mark Ames showed in old communist rag The Nation

  32. #32 |  claude |

“I really really despise the leftwing smear against the Koch brothers. As if simply funding ideological endeavors is something distasteful.”

That goes both ways… George Soros for instance.

  33. #33 |  Aresen |

And even if Satan himself was funding Radley’s work, we should be grateful, right?

As I understand it, “Satan” is a synonym for the Koch brothers on some websites.

  34. #34 |  Len |

    Of course it’s a right-wing conspiracy. Here’s a few facts:

1: Conservatives do not enjoy being tased, having their dogs shot, houses raided, or indeed, being shot by out-of-control police any more than anyone else.

2: While conservatives do not generally smoke pot, they probably would if it were legal. While they’re waiting, there’s vin ordinaire, martinis, and many other things alcoholic.

    3. Many conservatives are in favor of limited government, which includes limited police, and certainly does not include abusive, pork-bellied po-po’s being all uppity. On the other hand, the police do have a tough, thankless job.

    4. Almost all conservatives are willing to talk civilly about any topic and at least learn the best arguments for and against any policy. Perhaps not all the religious conservatives, but from their perspective (and mine) their hearts are in the right place.

    5. Some conservatives, such as Jonah Goldberg, really like dogs.

    6. Conservatives hate injustice.

    7. Nobody’s perfect.

As noted before, Radley is taking the path towards the right side by despising statism. Rejoice or lament as you will.

  35. #35 |  Swimmy |

Bob: Sorry to burst your bubble, but it’s pronounced “Coke.” Or at least, it was by the lady giving a phone interview when I applied for an internship ages ago. I figure she would know, working directly for the foundation and all.

  36. #36 |  Mike Leatherwood |

It is “Coke”…I interviewed for the company myself…

We all know that Radley is really a shill for independent music labels. I mean, a severe lack of Lady Gaga on Fridays proves this…

  37. #37 |  Contemplationist |

Well whatever you say about Fox News itself, you have to commend Fox for putting two real libertarians on there – Stossel and Judge Napolitano who actually called for a criminal prosecution of Bush. Although this is on the Fox Business Network, where else do we have such radical libertarian viewpoints without censorship?

  38. #38 |  Windy |

The Koch brothers pronounce their name “Coke” (I always thought it was pronounced “Kotch”).

  39. #39 |  Marle Robo |

I agree the Agitator. If I was a blogger of some renowned like him, I’d be trying to raise my profile in anyway that I could. Going on talk shows, any of them especially the popular ones, are the only way to do so. And it’s not like the opinions here are overly conservative. Here’s a test, Agitator, what do you think about this story? http://lawblog.legalmatch.com/2011/01/19/exonerated-after-30-years-in-prison-implications-for-the-death-penalty/

A true conservative would admonish DNA evidence as the devil’s work, what do you think???

  40. #40 |  BenSix |

…some Russian show nobody has ever heard of?…

Republicans like Russia Today? There’s a few Republicans who’d couldn’t reach the second word before violently imploding…

  41. #41 |  Mattocracy |

    @ 36

    +1 karma.

  42. #42 |  KristenS |

Gee, Balko, I thought you could just walk in unannounced and uninvited onto Maddow’s set and she’d be more than happy to interview you on camera! Isn’t that the way all media works?

  43. #43 |  witless chum |

    @Andrew at 4

You know you’re doing something right when Team Blue thinks you’re just another member of Team Red, and Team Red thinks you’re just another member of Team Blue.

Or you know that you’re Jared Loughner.

The joke that libertarians are Republicans who smoke pot is kinda funny, but, I firmly believe it’d be a better world if more of Republicans did so. Imagine stoned Dick Cheney. How fun would that be?

  44. #44 |  Ira |

That Russian TV spokesgal is hot.

Admit it, that’s why you do that one…

  45. #45 |  Will |

Appearing on the others is reasonable, but RT is Putin’s propaganda organ. As bad as problems in the US are, the Administration doesn’t (yet) assisinate journalists, and the kleptocracy isn’t on the same scale.

Radley, love your work and all, but what channel wouldn’t you appear on? If a grade-A tyrant (Kim, the ChiComs, Chavez, Mugabe) wanted you to come on his TV network to (by implication) suggest that his thugs were no worse than those in the US, would you?

  46. #46 |  Mike |

Hmmm…What’s wrong with smokin’ a little herb? I think of myself as a Conservative, but definitely not a Republican.
