Five-Star Fridays

Here’s an incredible Nashville band I saw a couple weeks ago. Not sure this video fully does them justice. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a bigger sound from a two-piece band, and that would include both the White Stripes and the Black Keys.

The band is the Cold Stares. The song is “Brother James”.

    I. LOVE. THIS.

    Thanks for letting me know about these guys. I’m not a big fan of two-piece bands, but I LOVE big-assed blues like this.

    Heretical as it sounds, I’d really like to hear Joe Bonamassa cover this tune. This was a killer performance, but I think with a tight bass line and a touch of B-3 on top it would bring the world to an end.

    This is great, but what explains the decision not to add a bass? Or at least a second lower-tuned guitar. I don’t get what they’d lose with more on the low end.

    Good stuff. I believe he’s got an octaver pedal (or something similar) going to cover the bass. He kicks it on for the chorus.

    Less band members = more cash!!

    This is great. Two-man bands kick ass when the chemistry is right. Do the Black Diamond Heavies still live in Nashville? They’re an awesome live duo: Rhodes organ & drums.

    He gets an amazing low end sound out of that guitar which probably explains the fullness to the sound. Almost every guitar riff has an accompanying note that sounds like a bass guitar, so that’s likely why they don’t need a bassist.

    Amazing song. Very 7 Nation Army in the sense that the chorus has no lyrics and is just a sick guitar riff.
