He’s Getting Rid of the Seaward

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

In November of last year I wrote a column about Nick Cheolas, a bright kid who was motivated by his own family’s run-in with the criminal justice system to go to law school. There he joined the University of Michigan’s Innocence Clinic, where he helped win the release of Dwayne Provience, a man wrongly convicted of murder in 2000.

Last October, I posted the bad news that Cheolas had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Cheolas now reports on his blog that his cancer is in remission.

Great news. Congratulations to Nick and his family.

    That is awesome news.

    Also,

    “Paper covers rock!”

Help me out – I don’t get how Arrested Development is connected to the story.

Prof: Nick Cheolas’ blog is titled “Get Rid of the Seaward”, a line from Arrested Development with double meaning. Michael tells GOB to “get rid of the Sea-ward”, the Sea-ward being GOB’s boat. The statement is made in front of their mother, Lucille, who retorts that she’ll “leave when she’s good and ready”, misunderstanding Michael’s statement as “get rid of the c-word”, meaning that GOB should get their mother, who is implied to be a c-word, or cunt, out of the office.

    Comprendre?

Finally, at the end of 2010, a non-bummer fatigue post! Radley, I’d stop here for the blog posting year!

Glad to see it! Nick is a great writer, thanks for publicizing his blog, it’s now been several months that I’ve been reading it and enjoying it immensely.

I just re-read that previous sentence, and I blame New Years booze anticipation for it’s un-grammar-ness.

OT – This should be worth some discussion.

Further elaborating on my above explanation, “c-word” is also used as a euphemism for cancer, which Mr. Cheolas is apparently and understandably trying to get rid of.

My brother wasn’t optimistic it could be done, but I wasn’t going to take ‘wasn’t optimistic it could be done’ for an answer!

It’s an illusion, Michael. A trick is something a whore does for money.
