Our part-time cat (neighbor travels for business, we keep his cat) once brought home a still-living chipmunk to my wife. She called me crying and asking what she should do with it. I suggested she euthanize it. Her response ;”Oh god, how?”

I said, “Use the cheese grater.”

She didn’t think it was as funny as I thought it was.

(The chipmunk revived and escaped. Although I’m pretty sure I saw it get eaten by a hawk a few days later.)

Mike: Isn’t squeaky dog toy an ecological niche?

Joel: That reminds me of a Labrador retriever I once owned. He felt he was too big to bother with squirrels, but a flash of cottontail and he’d be off into the woods at 30mph. There was no telling if he’d caught it or not – unless he left part of supper in the bowl that night.

My youngest dog concentrates on rabbits; squirrels seem beneath his notice. He never leaves incriminating bodies behind, having really developed a taste for them.

Maddy killed a half-dozen birds the first month we had her, including goldfinches. I think she wasn’t sure we were going to keep feeding her, so she wanted to be sure.

Only 1 squirrel? My #2 dog (of 4) is a squirrel killing machine! It’s gotten to the point that I don’t let her out in the yard during the fall acorn gathering season! She once killed 11 of the little buggers in one week. The other 3 are inept to the point of hilarity. Simone once got me back by putting a live captive in my bed! Catching and killing the poor thing took over an hour with four furry helpers to help/hinder me.

Had to do the same thing once, though it was a cat and mouse. Agonized over the method and whether or not to do it at all. Finally used a bowl of water and tongs to hold the little sucker under. Very unpleasant.
