That may have been “Hipster Hitler” and he’s an online cartoon. Or, the kid may have been addressing the insanity of calling everyone Hitler when you disagree with them. Anyway, there were a lot of Hitler pics everywhere at the Sanity Rally to poke fun of insane Cons calling Obama Hitler.

Yes, they forgot they called Bush Hitler just a few years earlier but as one woman pointed out “Well, Bush was pretty close.”

I am not suprised that many people at the rally didn’t recongnize the term Keynsian. No biggie, even at a rally that did probably have a high percentage of college grads. Most people don’t know much about economics. I am certainly not an economics expert and I am a college grad.

I was suprised, however, that people in this crowd conflated the term with Kenyan. Well, first of all, Obama IS part Kenyan, so why would they get offended even if someone said “Obama: Kenyan?” I would just be kind of like, “uh, yes, he is half Kenyan. What’s your point?”

But these people, who no doubt fancy themselves as Left-wing internationalists, don’t know the difference between Kenyan and Keynsian. Jesus Titty-Fucking Christ! I think this may be an indication that Right Populists and Left-wing populists are not so different.

Obviously they don’t show people who know about Keynes. That would ruin their joke. I was at the rally with several people who all know who Keynes is. Don’t view a comedy video as a representative sampling of the crowd. That said, I’d imagine the vast majority of people at any rally don’t know who Keynes is.

shecky, I wish Keynes was as obscure as Avogadro, but Keynesianism is a big idea now and it should stand out – particularly to people who believe in it!

We’re not talking about molar mass here but many of the things Obama has been lecturing us about – green jobs, “stimulus”, etc., which are, broadly speaking, Keynesianism in practice. On the other side of the spectrum, Radley recently mocked David Broder’s column on this blog for suggesting Obama start a new war to get the economy going, a notion which is often described as military Keynesianism. So Keynes is big now and it does look bad not to recognize the name.

This reminds me of the Man Show’s attempt to end women’s suffrage. They went on and on about how women are “suffraging” all over the country and we need to put an end to it. They even got people to join in their rally, though if I remember correctly, it was mainly people who demonstrated poor English skills (second language). Eventually, some women got involved and tried to explain what “suffrage” really was”. It was a pretty funny bit.

I’m sceptical.

The first woman is clearly stupid, but it would be easy to fake the video so that it looks like more people are. Ask a bunch of people whether Obama is Kenyan, film their answers and then paste in some frames of the sign saying ‘Obama = Keynesian’.

The fact that one woman says ‘I thought you said Kenyan’ makes this feel like a Borat/Michael Moore type stunt rather than a gauge of how much people know about economics.

Keynesian? Really? I dunno… I think I’m willing to give folks a pass on that one. John Maynard Keynes isn’t exactly a household name on either political side. I’d probably place that name among others of relatively great importance, but broad obscurity, such as Avogadro or Fibonacci.

Other stuff, though, I’m not so forgiving.

To be fair, I could definitely see The Daily Show doing something like this. It was a comic stunt not really a political one. Most people are fairly ignorant about economics and it shows on both sides of the aisle.
