The states have no right to govern the airwaves, the is the for the FCC. Baning Radar Detectors and now trying to ban Scanners. Whats next AM/FM radios, CB's and any other receivers they don't like. People need to fight for their rights. I live in Virginia and own Scanners, CB's and Radar Detectors, I also use them. I like listening to the scanner, I find interesting.

The problem with that is that you're assuming the police have to abide by the law, which of course has always been true but no longer is.

That said, Virginia is one of the few states that bans (or used to ban?) radar detectors. I have long regarded the state as infected with far too many police.

If the police don't want people listening to their radio broadcasts, then they should cough up the dough and provide for encryption. But, that would be a true waste of money, as they really do not need to stop people from listening -- they just don't want anyone hearing something that might be embarrassing to the cops.

But there has to be enforcement on illegal immigration.

It's funny how many bald assertions one sees from anti-freedom-of-movement types.

The place to enforce illegal status is on employers, with civil fines that discourage employers hiring illegals.

Or, you know, you could try staying the hell out of other people's business.

I owe nothing to the rest of the world, other than to respect them enough to leave them alone.

Oh, the irony.

We do not have to open our borders to all.

"We" do not own the borders. Your collectivism is showing.

That said, I welcome legal immigration to the United States, with the goal of assimilation...

What is "assimilation" in this context?

But hey, if you have better ideas, say so.

How about basic respect for property rights?

We put ourselves first too, don’t we? But at the same time we treat our neighbors with respect.

The cases don't seem comparable at all. The ranchers aren't trying to keep the monks out because OMGTHEY'RECATHOLIC, they're just being stubborn (perhaps reasonably or perhaps not, I'd have to know more details) over purely practical (utility, resource, and easement) issues. But sure, if the monks peaceably purchase their property fair and square then nobody has any business either legally harrassing them or trying to shame or pressure them into leaving, especially for some especially stupid reason (like anti-Catholic sentiment).

#23 | Boyd Durkin -- "Anyone want to place bets on what penalty (if any) the cop will face after blowing away the whittler?"

Most likely scenario is paid administrative leave followed by a 10% chance that he's brought up on some misdemeanor charge, which will bring probation. He may or may not be fired by the PD, but he'll be back in law enforcement with another PD within a few months.

I don't even see a civil lawsuit in this case as the victim was homeless.

If there were a God in heaven, he would envy the power of U.S. police.

“Apparently God doesn’t like immigrants, either.”

I am a big proponent of greatly expanded legal immigration Radley. I think our current immigration policy sucks. I also support some sort of path to legal status for those who are here.

But there has to be enforcement on illegal immigration. A quasi legal (or illegal) system is not the answer, so the status quo has to change. Arizona’s law is focused on the wrong target. The place to enforce illegal status is on employers, with civil fines that discourage employers hiring illegals.

Libertarian does not mean putting your own country first. I owe nothing to the rest of the world, other than to respect them enough to leave them alone. We do not have to open our borders to all.

That said, I welcome legal immigration to the United States, with the goal of assimilation and equal protection and respect to all. Our country benefits from smart immigration. The current system sucks. It creates a quasi serf class with little hope of legality.

And there is nothing wrong with taking the best and the brightest. That increases wealth to all.

But hey, if you have better ideas, say so.

#35 derfel cadarn: "the police as supposed professionals can NEVER fire the first shots in any altercation"

Never? What? Well, no, that doesn't make any sense. I understand that the SPD shooting does not appear to be justified, but think about what you just said. They can "NEVER fire first shots in any altercation." So they have to wait until a suspect armed with a firearm gets a shot off before they can return fire? Or if they are jumped by a suspect who purposely slashes at them with a blade or swings a metal pipe they would not be justified in firing "first shots."

Come on, this kind of poor, ill informed argumentation doesn't get us anywhere. It only empowers police unions and those in law enforcement who want to say, "see the public doesn't know what they are talking about, so let us do our jobs." With all due respect, you don't know what you are talking about in this case, and you might consider learning a thing or two about responses to armed attacks before you make a blanket statement like you did above.
prison guards are the lowest scum I've ever come across. they've always paid prisoners to beat other prisoners- many times for entertainment.

the best solution: only send people to prison who need to be in prison. no drug users. nobody guilty of a victimless crime should ever be in prison. no non-violent offenders need to be in a maximum security prison. this will dramatically reduce the burden on all of us. plus, it'll reduce the number of slimeballs given the power to be prison guards. it'll also reduce the slimeball healthcare workers. google 'cms prison abuse or death or lawsuit or...' many of the doctors are slime who've been barred from practicing elsewhere. many of the nurses are slime who've been fired from respectable jobs.

the prison industry and the military industrial complex are two of my biggest fears in this country.

MC, it's not meaningless, it means "if not for my more fortunate circumstances." A perfectly cromulent turn of phrase, if used in proper context, and not simply spouted by an empty-headed twit who thinks it sounds pretty.

"So, you know, there but for the grace of God I arrived."

That doesn't even make any fucking sense. Maybe she meant "By the grace of God," but what actually came out of her mouth is simply moronic, and even in different context it would mean the opposite of what she was seemingly going for. Just another conceited brainless corrupt mouthpiece.

Re: Janet & God - "but for the grace of God" is an idiomatic expression that is pretty meaningless. She surely didn't mean that God put her in office or she would have used stronger language. Note that some politicians have actually made that claim.
