I agree, this is a great album. I’m listening to it right now, in fact. I second your endorsement!
Radley,
If you don’t already own a copy, I’d highly recommend The Pine Valley Cosmonauts’ The Executioner’s Last Song Volumes 1-3. It’s all murder ballads featuring artists like Steve Earle (turning in a great version of “Tom Dooley”), Neko Case, Alejandro Escovedo and Dave Alvin.
It’s not all old hillbilly songs either (although that’s my personal preference); there are also covers of The Advert’s “Gary Gilmore’s Eyes” and 999′s classic punk anthem, “Homicide”.
Proceeds from the albums benefit the National Coalition Against the Death Penalty.
Great selection, Radley!
So much better than the big hair bands of the 80′s…lol
I admit having a bias to bluegrass and traditional American music. This was very well done ode to the sad old theme.
Thanks for sharing it.
I’d like to buy “The Executioner’s Last Song”, except that I support the death penalty.
Josh Ritter is playing in Nashville on August 8th. If you go, you should take some pictures for your site…
