Panic!
Monday, April 12th, 2010Amanda Marcotte does some intrepid reporting and discovers that . . . some men like to look at the pictures their attractive female friends post on Facebook.
Meanwhile, CNN runs two stories about a Japanese board video game involving rape that has been out of print for two years.
TheAgitator.com
Board game? Pretty sure the article says video game.
Through a board game involving rape would be fun at parties.
/sarcasm
My friend and I have decided we’re going to make “Oh God, the children!” shirts, for use in any and all moral panics.
OMG! Some man might, without my knowledge, be ogling revealing pictures of me on my social networking profiles? I had no idea! (Insert eye-roll here.)
I’m pretty sure that plays a significant part in why those pictures show up on profiles to begin with.
The naiveté Ms. Marcotte displays when she suggests women might go stripping these images from their profiles after reading her article is almost charming. Almost.
First link doesn’t come across as a PANIC! at all. She sounds like she’s going for a Cool Mom tone, which is somehow only a little weird.
Next we’ll have a shocked article about men oggling their neighbours’ pets.
Wait. That’s not just me, is it?
Complicating matters, Facebook is rife with pictures of very young women experimenting with ribaldry, probably unaware of how those pictures might be read by men.
Yeah, has Ms. Marcotte met teen/twenty-something women? The girl that has the shorts with ‘Juicy’ across the butt doesn’t think (nay demand!) that those ribald pix are going to be ogled at?
But to quote the inimitable Shem, “all that can be done for Japan at this point is to keep an accurate record of their slow-motion crash and be prepared to take in the refugees.”
Men LIKE pretty pictures of pretty lady friends. More on this at 11.
I always wonder why people like Radley aren’t offered good jobs from the big news companies… I think this is a nice answer.
It’s a computer game, actually.
From the comment on Marcotte’s article:
Most of it read like an eleventh grade girl trying to write a SERIOUS article for her high school paper.
Spot. On.
Also, someone needs to alert Marcotte to a site called Flickr.com. Somehow, millions of teen girls are posting nudie pics of themselves without realizing that MEN are looking at them. I’m sure they’ll pull them down once Mandy sets them straight.
We’re freaking out over Japan’s video games.
Do other countries freak out on our violence-saturated
movies like Saw III where it’s some femme
flopping around on a meat hook?

Welcome to the world of Amanda Marcotte’s writing.
I’m just surprised the headline didn’t read “Men RAPING women on Facebook…(sort of).”
Best that you just stop thinking about it, then. Cause it ain’t going to stop, no matter how many photos you delete, unless you can delete them from our very brains.
(Also, she doesn’t want to think about it, so she wrote an entire article on the subject?!)
Related.
I’m going to search on google for a pic of Amanda and ogle it right now…..
I could give much creepier quotes had I been interviewed.
The surprising thing about the report on the Japanese video game is that it never mention how seriously effed up Japanese porn is. Oh, sure the Germans lead the world in golden showers. But the Japanese have some real weird stuff going on which I will not list here (unless asked).
Marcotte is what can only be described as irrational. She views everything through her prism of feminims/male dominance. And as the saying goes, when all you have is a hammer, everything tends to look like a nail.
You really don’t want to do that.
Right. Because putting out an article that touches on the interesting phenomenon about how men are looking at pictures of real women on Facebook instead of seeking out fake porn is totally “PANIC”. I was particularly PANICKED by her statement that men’s viewing history online might be seen as a good thing, given all the actual, you know, PANIC, in the media as of late about how porn fantasies are destroying men’s very souls (!) and their relationships (funny, I don’t recall a post making fun of the hysteria of those folks… oh yeah, they aren’t liberal feminists, so they are okay).
But yeah! Fuck you Marcotte, for pointing out that the conventional wisdom about men desiring porn stars over real women might not be as big of an issue as the mainstream media is making it out to be. How dare you help dismantle the moral argument against pornography by calling out the hype that surrounds it! Also, you are totally ugly (high-five, bros!).
Now why don’t we all sit around in a circle and put our little brains to work about why women are so small in number at libertarian conventions.
Signed,
A liberal feminist that reads The Agitator but abhors it’s commenters. Now make a joke about how I should make you a sandwich, because that’s like, totally funny and original.
Wow Stacy, got a few issues I see.
Well, I don’t know if this makes fun of them, but Radley did have this. Also, this as well. Do you really read the Agitator?
And I don’t think you get this whole “libertarian” thing here. If I want to destroy my soul, well….why shouldn’t I be allowed to do that? How is it any different than destroying one’s life via drugs, alcohol, or some other substance or activity?
No, more of a I couldn’t even give a shit thing. Marcotte is a nutjob who has yet to apologize for her horrifying post regarding the Duke Lacrosse players who were falsly accuse of rape (at least I haven’t seen any post apologizing).
And lets run with this on a bit…here we have some kooky drug using stripper who falsly accuses several men of rape. You’d think that as a feminist that would piss of Marcotte even more. Why? Because now poeple might take claims of rape at less than face value after such a huge and public debacle than they otherwise might. But no! Marcotte rushes in proclaims the players rapists, then, IIRC, plays the race card. Gets her ass handed to her, and then nothing on that topic.
Yeah? With stuff like this?
Look, that is what guys do.
You should do it anyways and not because some guy might be perving on your picture, but because some employers have started looking at such sites and having a bunch of pictures engaged in drunken revelry might not be such a good move when it comes to seeking employment.
Be honest, you had your sense of humor removed years ago.
Nah, just bored.
Wow, you dug up something from 2005! You sure schooled me (but in all honesty, I remember that piece, where the hell does the time go?). Now, in seriousness, I know that Balko doesn’t have an issue with porn. He doesn’t much have an issue with anything of that sort. My complaint here is who he is seeking out for criticism. Can you honestly say that the piece featured on NRO is not better fodder for ridicule? I mean, shit. “The woman he became involved with was an unemployed alcoholic with all the physical qualities of a porn star — bleached blond hair, heavy makeup, provocative clothing, and large breasts.” That’s pretty lol worthy, if you ask me.
But can you really not formulate a better argument then “Nuh-uh, he totally wrote something about it in 2005?” I think he’s actually commented on it since then. And yes, I am a faithful agitatortot.
Did I say I did? Why no, no I did not. Hey, how’s it going, strawman? You just assumed that because hey – liberal feminist! And here lays the problem. I have no problem with you “destory(ing your) soul”. Really, I don’t. If I, or Marcotte, were demanding that government screen Facebook users to see who, just who, was looking at those dirty little pictures, you may have a point to your self-righteousness. But sadly, no one is doing that. We are just opinionating on the cultural trend. Which is a completely rational thing to do for those that are interested in these sorts of things. Because, like I pointed out, it’s been in the news lately, and usually overblown. And it’s interesting to see the actual trends buck those “facts” that they feed us, like Marcotte did. But apparently, we should never talk about these findings? No, talking about such things makes me a bad libertarian! Bad! Shut up! God!
Of course. Which is totally why you commented. Because you wanted to show just how much you couldn’t give a shit.
And bloggers have never been wrong before in the history of blogging! This is an atrocity! But LOL@Duke resentment. Because I’ve totally never met anyone that attempted to discredit all of feminism on the basis of the Duke rape case before. Scout’s honor.
It does. So does stuff like this. But strangely enough, I see little outrage over stuff like this.
ZOMG, RLY? I never knew until you pointed it out to me! Seriously, no shit, dude. But you know what gals do (and guys as well)? They get icked out by that shit. How comfortable are you with your boss checking out your personal photos? I mean, if there’s anything we can agree on, isn’t it that it’s a bit creepy for your boss to go looking for sexy photos of you? Again, not a criminal offense or anything. It’s life. But still… it can be kind of creepy. And that it hurts your feelings to proclaim it so doesn’t make it any less creepy.
I’m laughing at you. Does that count?
Shit. I’m not Jim. I’m Stacy. Sorry!
IMO, the best comment from the article:
“Abrahamic monotheism’s hostility to women [plus] feminism’s hostility to men = a self-loathing and culturally conflicted mess of deep-seated pathologies related to human sexuality. Pick your poison.”
Jimn/Stacy,
Actually he referenced it fairly recently which you’d know if you actually…you know…read the Agitator. And did you not read the second article from 2009? Wait…do you know how to read?
Hmmm…if you say so.
Oh well then it is all okay then, nothing to see move along.
Really? Where is Marcotte’s post on that? Where does she take Crystal Gail Mangum to task? So does this make Marcotte not a feminist or just an intellectually dishonest feminist?
Its a sign of maturity and reasonableness to say, “Hey, I was wrong I blew it.” Marcotte hasn’t done that and has implicitly stood by her initial position no matter how idiotic.
Oh I’m so sorry I’m not outraged over a story I have not seen until right this minute. And yes, lets compare a story about a woman’s really horrible experience that appears in a city newspaper to a national news story. Totally the same thing.
BTW, for those interested, Marcotte’s Duke Lacrosse post which she chicken shitted out on and deleted, but thanks to KC Johnson at Durham in Wonderland here it is,
Complete loon.
Oh and yes, these men were exonerated. There was zero evidence. No DNA from lacrosse players, a rape kit that was totally inconclusive, a nurse doing the rape kit who was un/under-trained, and a supposed victim who is known as a liar and drug user. And to be clear, there was DNA, just not from the lacrosse players.
Marcotte then posted this in place of the above,
A true paragon of virtue and truth seeking. See the girl really was raped, that there was no evidence at all is irrelevant. A good prosecutor could have made the case work out.
More here.
Like a broken clock Marcotte might be right every now and then, but who cares, she’s obviously such a nut the default position should be ignore her.
