Tom Waits. “Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis.”

The video is likely one of the first times he performed this live because the crowd laughs in parts, apparently unfamiliar with the sucker punch at the end of the song.

That was excellent. I hate to be the first commenter as I’m really not worthy but that was great.
I don’t understand though… I’ve heard exactly 1 song by Tom Waits (Buzz Fledderjohn) and I even knew this wasn’t a humorous rendition. I wonder if he did a funny type song before this and the crowd was still in the mood. You’d think being at a Tom Waits show they’d know what he’s about… but then again maybe I don’t know what he’s about.
Either way, that was very cool. Thanks!

Tom Waits is always an excellent choice for Five-Star Friday.

Even with the gut-punch coming at the end, I think some of the middle parts merit a laugh. But then again, I also catch myself laughing over strange facts in some of the horrible criminal cases we study in class (a sexual assault defendant named Smallwood? Really?), so maybe I just have an inappropriate sense of humor. Though with the horrible things that happen out in the world, I think if you don’t learn to laugh whenever possible you’ll become overwhelmed with it all.

Am I the only one who couldn’t make it thru the song? I don’t demand virtuosity out of my singers, but come on…

I made it. Wish I hadn’t… And what was the supposed sucker punch?
