Idol Blogging
Thursday, February 25th, 2010So the men are terrible. They’re miles behind the women this year. It’s not really even worth going through the entire lineup. So many lost, nervy, forgettable performances. I’m not sure most of them are even capable of stepping it up. It’s Casey James, then Andrew Garcia, then everyone else.
James was great, and I can’t wait for him to try something more upbeat. Eager to see more bluesy guitar licks from him, too. But judges and Idol producers, please, stop playing up Kara Dioguardi’s crush on the guy. It was silly when she had him take his shirt off during his audition. Last night was just embarrassing.
I thought Garcia was very good too, despite what the judges said. Maybe his on-stage insularity was more apparent in the studio than it was on TV. But he sounded fantastic, and it’s a bit confusing for the judges to constantly be telling the contestants to “make the song yours,” then criticize this guy because they didn’t like how he altered the song.
Of the rest, Tyler Grady stands out as the biggest disappointment. I actually like the 70s shtick. But Grady was listless. If you’re going to invoke Jagger and Morrison, fuel up on the Adderall before you take the stage. I’m a huge fan of the Guess Who. That was one limp impersonation. I hoped for bigger things from this guy. Maybe it was nerves. I’ve thought Michael Lynche has been way overrated and overexposed through the preliminary rounds, and he confirmed that last night. Also, he’s the least healthy-looking personal trainer I’ve ever seen. Lee Dewyze has some promise, but I hate what he did to that Snow Patrol song. That song’s appeal is its hypnotic, shoegaze pull. Rasping it up and adding rock inflections completely killed the vibe.
Prediction: Tim Urban and John Park brought up the ass-end of a really mediocre lineup.

Everyone knows what the judges expect is for you to be creative, experiment, and surprise them while staying in the little box they assigned you to when you were cast for the show because you were a certain ‘type’.
The first guy sounded like if he was left to his own devices, he would have rapped the lyrics and sang the chorus. Might have worked better if he did.
Agreed, for the most part. I liked Garcia better than James, but both were the “best” of the night. I agree that the girls, as a group, are better than the guys. But I still think that Garcia is the favorite to win this year. I don’t like Fallout Boy — in fact, I hate Fallout Boy — but I thought that was a pretty good version. I have been singing it since last night.
I enjoyed Lee Dewyze. Could have been better, but I think he has something.
I also like Alex Lambert. He was way too nervous and it was uncomfortable, but I really like the tone of his voice. I hope he sticks around.
I like Tyler Grady too see what he evolves into.
The rest can go.
My take. We agree on the best two and the silliness surrounding Casey. What do you expect, though? It’s Fox!
I disagree on Park’s performance. I hated the song, but I hope he carries forward so he’ll have at least one modern song to show us.
Something about Tyler Grady reminds me of Screech. The guy really bugs me for some reason.
I thought Lee was good last night, although did wander a bit off pitch at times. Casey and Garcia were very strong I felt.
Everyone else was not memorable. I did not know why the judges liked that 16 year old so much, nor the Mexican kid. Both were OK at best.
I do NOT stand corrected!
What was Simon on fluffing Lee? Dreadful.
Defensive tackles make horrible personal trainers.
I may not watch Idol again until the final 4. Both nights were complete train wrecks.
Someone made a Fallout Boy song have even less balls than normal, and that is good?
The men really are terrible, though not as hilariously bad as Haeley Vaughn, so it wasn’t even that fun to watch. Tim Urban and Jermaine Sellers were almost funny, but then they would hit a note that just made me cringe.
The women are only “miles ahead” in that there were a few that actually sounded good. They also had their fair share of mediocre and terrible performances (worst: Haeley Vaughan and Lacey Brown).
I was bummed the blonde got booted… I liked looking at her which to this point is the only redeeming value of this years line-up. Put me down for Garcia. Hopefully he can come up with something that will make the panel forget about his “Straight Up” performance. That was awesome, but it could end up being his undoing.
