As a child of the 80′s, I approve this post. For a mashup, I must say that the production value of this is quite high, and if I had not broken my ipod while shoveling snow, this would be on it. (Still love Journey; Metallica…not so much.)
Check out their website – they have some other good shit on there. I very well may consider actually BUYING their CD. (And if so this would be my first actual CD purchase since discovering Napster some time in the year 1999.)
You must have had a pretty braindead childhood to get the joke. Don;t get me wrong, having a braindead childhood is second only to having a braindead adulthood. It’s a great thing and should be encouraged (again, only slightly less than having a carefree, perpetually-high and oblivious adulthood), but for comparison’s sake, while you were apparently in the throes of pop culture, I was memorizing chapter after chapter of ancient legal texts written in a language that’s been unspoken (by anyone that matters anyway) for over a thousand years.
I won’t lie and say that my temptation to be derisive isn’t based on jealousy, it is. But what REALLY bothers me is that all of these silly things that people claim to admire I happen to have in droves but a) don’t actually get much admiration for them because people don’t really admire the values they claim to and b) don’t really admire them myself (note the pean to happy-go-lucky potheads).
Check out “You Shook Me Like a Prayer” on youtube. No video for that, but even better than “Don’t Stop the Sandman.”
Big ups to these guys! Very creative and fun!

I think concept bands are the only creative musicians left.

Re: #2
Journey is cool. You might not be familiar with their recent history, but they have a new lead singer from the Philippines named Arnel Pineda. They found him as he was the lead singer for an 80s cover band called The Zoo who had posted some of their best covers on youtube. Journey was lead-singerless, and Neil Schon was browsing youtube one evening and came upon Zoo’s covers of their music. The guy can do a perfect Steve Perry voice. Rather than send take-down notices to youtube, they invited Pineda to the US to audition for their lead-singer spot and ultimately hired him. They then cut a new album and toured some sizable venues.
So, my guess is that they’re cool with this. They’re not like Metallica.
You people with your links to all these great mashups are killing me this morning.
Imma pay you back by pointing out Jonathan Coulton’s mp3 of When I’m 25 Or 64. It’s a little over halfway down this page, under the album title “Thing a Week One”, and can be streamed or downloaded for free.
maybe consider sticking to posts about corrupt cops and prosecutors and stupid drug warrior antics. You have a talent in the area of exposing that shit.
But please, your taste in music just SUCKS!!!
I highly recommend anyone that is interested in mashups check out DJ Z-TRIP. He’s widely considered to be the originator of the mashup artform. His collaboration with DJ P called Uneasy Listening Vol. 1 is a masterpiece of the genre. Also check out his Live in LA set as well, amazing. If you can catch him live, even better.
Girl Talk is quite amazing and Feed the Animals has been in heavy rotation in my car. However, I will always have a soft spot for guys who do it with turntables. That said, also check out the album As Heard on Radio Soulwax Part 2 by 2 Many DJ’s (alter ego of Soulwax). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/As_Heard_on_Radio_Soulwax_Pt._2
Pretty good Mash-up, but if you live in the DC area you should listen to “Flounder’s Mash-ups” on DC101. He’s got some ones that are way more unexpected.

Good humor…
Along the same lines, check out the “Literal Video” version of this Journey tune:
It’s taken me two weeks to get around to posting about it, but The Agitator posted this great video of a band called Rock Sugar doing an amazing Mashup of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’ and Metallica’s Enter the Sandman.
Thank god for the internets.
Of course, now I have two songs in my MP3 folder I will never be able to listen to the same way again.
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.
I just hope the members of Metallica and Journey (as well as their legal representation) have a sense of humor about this.
Wait a minute–WTF would make ANYONE think that anyone associated with Metallica or Journey would have the sense to laugh along with the joke?
Hope Rock Sugar has good lawyers, ’cause I’m afraid they might need ‘em.
#2 – Imagine if they’d thrown some Prince in there – this video wouldn’t last an hour on YouTube.
Ainsley Dunbar used to be in Journey before Steve Perry. They MUST have had a sense of humor once!
Well, if this is still around…

I like the mash up of bossa nova and new wave of Nouvelle Vague

I never cared much for steve perry, I was a greg rollie kinda guy when it comes to journey… but this is cool!
#5 | Michaelk42- you ruined any chance of me being productive this morning…
OOH YEAH!
Man, that was… serious earwormy.
Thank God for Neubauten. Guaranteed earworm removal or your eardrums back! :)
That is totally f&*#^$% awesome!

That’s almost as good as Dylan’s Must Be Santa!

The lead singer? He was the voice of Wakko Warner. I think that adds something.
Best Mashup ever?

Yes I think so…
As long as we’re posting brilliant mashups, here’s one of my favorites.

Bonus points for the Penn & Teller cameo.

Those are kids’ play. If you haven’t heard Girl Talk, you don’t know how smooth a mashup can be:

Here is “Rock in Black” by Go Home:

It quite simply doesn’t get any better than this, that is, until Vidler outdoes himself again.
Meh.

This is awesome (says a huge huge Journey fan – yes I just aged myself there).

OK…I really liked Tricky Child O’ Mine. Not quite a mashup but I really enjoyed these “covers”:

That is truly the coolest effin thing I’ve heard in ages.
Like Metallica even owns their music.
