How About “People Who Enjoy Brunch”?

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Weird poll of the day: According to a new New York Times/CBS News survey, 79 percent of respondents who identified as Democrats say they favor allowing gay men and lesbians to serve in the military, and 60 percent favor allowing them to serve openly.

But according to the same poll, only 59 percent of Democrats favor allowing homosexuals to serve, and only 44 percent favor allowing them to serve openly.

According to the New York Times’ “The Caucus” blog, the weird disparity wasn’t as prominent with Republicans and independents.

(DISCLOSURE: I enjoy brunch more than any straight man should.)

Hey, I enjoy brunch too, and I am super, super, super straight.

I read this on your twitter feed earlier today, and since then I’ve been trying to wrap my head around it. I just CANNOT understand this.

I guess the disparity might make sense if Democrats were marginally stupider than Republicans. But surely that can’t be right.

I enjoy brunch for the bloody marys alone.

That explains why democrats are always coming up with flowery terms to make their ideas more appealing. Like rain forest instead of jungle, and undocumented worker instead of illegal alien, and baby seal instead of fur coat.

  6. #6 |  Aaron |

It’s because “homosexual” has the word “sex” in it.

  7. #7 |  Bryan |

Umm…clearly 20% of the Democrats surveyed were only in favor of happily excited people in the military.

And they want to reclaim the word.

    I’m more partial to linner.

    Or lupper.

It seems like the article is saying that two separate groups were polled and it came up with different results. Maybe they got their sample size too small by dividing in half…that or most people are just schizophrenic. Probably the latter.

Brunch had me at the Omelet bar.

    @9 Comrade Dread

I’ll see your omelet bar and raise you a (possibly traditionally southern?) fried chicken Sunday brunch.

    @Cynical in CA

Is lupper a turkey sandwich and pretzels at 3 in the afternoon?

You were definitely ahead of the curve on brunch. One of the earliest conversations I remember having with you was you asking what places in St. Louis had a good brunch. At the time it seemed like a ridiculous question, as no place in St. Louis had a good brunch because only old people and Easter celebrators went to brunch. Now I would bet that most good bars in the city have it.

Lord help me I even read it in the smarmy french accent and immediately heard the crashing of bowling pins in my head. I am way too much of a pop culture geek.

hey radley, do you still go to rusticos, or are you boycotting them now that they don’t do the beer pops any more?

Makes me wonder what the responses would be like if asked about heterosexuals serving in the military. :D

  25. #25 |  Poly the Tick |

Not only should we allow homosexuals to openly serve in the military, we should encourage it. They can dress in pink tutus and march (prance) unarmed up the front lines. While the enemy is busy either laughing or puking, the real men can go in and shoot the now vulnerable enemy.

On the serious side, except for those jerks who make a big thing about their “queerness”, homosexuals in the military should be treated the same as anyone else who kills babies for the state.

  26. #26 |  noahpoah |

What does brunch have to do with gay homosexuals or queer lesbians? The way I see it, brunch is an(other) excuse to eat bacon. Don’t matter what you like to put in your mouth in the bedroom, s’long as you like to eat bacon, you can enjoy brunch.

haha this reminds me of the west wing episode where josh lyman makes fun of the 68% that think we spend too much in foreign aid, with only 59% of those people thinking it should be cut….

I think that democrats just like lesbians. When I read the word “homosexual”, I tend to think of gay men.

By the way, I prefer brinner.

A vast majority of African Americans are Democrats. I’d like to see that demographic surveyed on the same question.

Just wanted to show my support for the brinner crowd!

Hate to tell you, but back in the ’60s Sunday Brunch at the O-Club was a standard feature at Air Force bases.

  33. #33 |  Rob Robertson |

    Re: #25, Poly the Tick,

Back in the early ’80s I served in the Air Force with several (closeted) homosexuals who were every bit as dedicated to defending America as any heterosexual. Now that I’m older and a bit wiser I certainly detest American foreign policy and how it perverts the honorable intentions of those who would die protecting this country, but I still bristle at the cheap, thoughtless attacks on all service members as ‘baby killers’ and homosexuals as something less than “real” men and women.

I hate pigs, but there are plenty of decent, honorable LEOs putting it all on the line to fight the good fight against the bad guys. Public schools are a joke, but there are some teachers out there pouring their heart and soul into guiding young minds to a life of learning. Slacker union hacks milking the system? Sure, but some other union guy is out there breaking his back to build the stuff of our lives. The list of stereotypes and their exceptions goes on and on. Don’t feed it.

You are correct. Ironically, many of the anarchists I know work for government.

My first paragraph was meant to push Radley’s buttons since he seems to be constantly pushing homosexuality.

There is no excuse for the military. It is a voluntary force. After more than 20 years of Bush/Clinton/Bush/Obama without any change in policy and use of the National Guard as a foreign fighting force, who can claim that they didn’t know what they were getting into? They are no better than their leadership. Baby Killers.

And until there is a clear trend of LEO’s policing their own there is no reason to consider any of them as anything more than blood thirsty pigs. I think William N Grigg is right on target. http://www.freedominourtime.blogspot.com

20% of Democrats think “gay” means “happy”?

  36. #36 |  airforce |

You know, it would probably bother me a little if I knew the fellow sharing my foxhole was gay. But it would bother me a whole lot more if I knew he was one of the 20% who didn’t know gays and homosexuals were the same thing.

  37. #37 |  Nathan W. |

    @#33 Rob

Hey brother I agree with you. I am a serviceman right now in the ARMY and I don`t see myself as a “Baby Killer”, and to honest I would probably break my foot off in someones fifth point of contact if they called me one to my face. (Poly)

But on the other subject of gays (guys/girls) serving openly in the military, that would definitely present a problem. For one if someone was gay they would need to separated from straight soldiers in training. (No straight man that I know of would want to share an open shower with another guy they new to be gay) if they weren`t separated it would cause friction. It would. You can say no all you want but I`m speaking realistically. It would. I know how guys are and I know how soldiers are. It would cause problems. It would also affect trust between gay and straight soldiers. The last thing I want to think about in a foxhole is whether or not my battle buddy is staring at my ass. Not to mention the fact that it would also increase dramatically the amount of EO complaints that are filed from soldiers. Guys are jerks, and soldiers are smartasses. We crack jokes. Alot. We have enough trouble now in the military over the last years trying to smoothly integrate females in the service. Lets finish dealing with that problem before taking on another one.

  38. #38 |  Nathan W. |

    @#33 Rob

What I will say though is that gays are real people and deserve respect. The matter of their service should be addressed, but honestly I think in todays military it would do more harm than good.

  39. #39 |  Rob Robertson |

    Nathan,

Along with being prior military, I’m also a dues-paying, card-carrying member of the American Association for Nude Recreation. I know it’s difficult for many to grasp, but it IS possible for people, *all* people, to enjoy social nudism in a non-sexual context. At the Mountain Air Ranch in Colorado many years ago I was sharing a shower with a beautiful, buxom blonde when my wife walked in.

“Hi, honey! This is Debbie. Debbie, this is my wife, Tammy.”

    (smalltalk/chit-chat ensues, showering continues)

Now, I mention this because at most nudist clubs and beaches there are also gay men and lesbians, and the same kind of simple, friendly, non-sexual contact occurs. I can talk to, play volleyball with, or even shower with a straight woman or a gay man and that’s all it is; nudity isn’t seen as an open invitation to sex.

And I’m speaking realistically here, too; gays already are and have always been in the military (and in professional sports and anywhere *real* men and women can be found). You’ve probably showered with a gay man and didn’t know it. You might be serving with a gay servicemember and don’t know it because they’re performing their duties with professionalism and integrity and they have no interest in you sexually (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

I can appreciate the difficulty some, maybe most, men would have with serving with an openly gay person. I felt resentment at a woman who complained to the First Sergeant about me spit-shining my boots in the Ready Room because it was “gross”, but then again, there was Yvette who was my “go-to gal” on the flightline because she was the smartest, most capable person I had working for me, and I was grateful to have her serving with me.

The U.S. military is socialist in structure, and as the bloody point of the spear that is our evil, destructive foreign policy, I’m not a big supporter of it as it currently exists. But if you want to talk about people who care about freedom and are willing to defend the country that once was the shining beacon of liberty in the world, I’ll stand with anyone – man or woman, gay or straight – to fight the good fight.
