That South Carolina law requiring subversives to register isn’t silly – it’s very dangerous. They don’t expect anyone’s actually going to register. But what this gives them is another huge threat to use against anyone arrested for political activities they don’t like. Say you’re a Marxist (or a libertarian!) handing out literature or writing a blog that denounces the government. This law would allow the police to threaten you with 10 years in jail for doing this because of your failure to register as a subversive.

*Everyone* who votes in government elections is attempting to control the government, and even worse, their neighbors. Some votistas even believe that voting is a moral duty.

Here’s the comic relief:

The Detroit Board of Police Commissioners has passed a resolution calling “to have the truth be revealed”…

the board declared in the resolution it “will continue to strive for the objective scrutiny and resolution to the fatal shooting of Cleric Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah, not presuming guilt or innocence.”

Yep, you know how cops are always seeking out the absolute irrefutable truth with unflinching dedication and total immunity to mythical influences such as “the thin blue line” and other completely unwarranted folk lore about how they cover each others asses no matter what.

And when everyone finally has their story straight, they will announce precisely what went down or at least make that more common claim that everyone acted according to strict police regulations.

The subversion law is just a catch-all for people they want to arrest for subversion before they fabricate all the proof. They do the same, on a federal scale, to foreign visitors. You have to declare you’re not coming to the US to commit terrorist acts, break any laws, etc. If you do, they’ll catch you first on violating your declaration, and only then decide what you have done.

“Largely” but not completely debunked Super Bowl Sunday-domestic violence link.

The second study cited in the post “found a tiny positive effect for a rise in domestic violence dispatches on or after Super Bowl Sunday.” That study had a larger set of data, but not in a peer-reviewed journal.

If I lived in South Carolina I would seriously consider registering just to demonstrate the absurdity of the law. According to the article, “The law states that ‘fraternal’ and ‘patriotic’ groups are exempt from the law, but only if they don’t ‘contemplate the overthrow of the government.’” As such, one could simply organize a “patriotic” or “fraternal” historical society which discusses Jefferson’s statement that “when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce [the people] under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security,” and such an organization would have to be registered under this law.

hmmmm…”EVERY PERSON WHO ADVOCATES, TEACHES, ADVISES ETC., OF CONTROLLING THE GOVERNMENT…”
