I love Old Fasioneds (is that a proper usage), and I have never seen Mad Men, and doubt I ever will – though I have heard it’s good. I’m just not very invested in “good” television. Give me the crap on UPN, CW and the rest of the also rans.

Radley, for the life of me I can’t find anything in my comment regarding how long you have or have not been drinking bourbon. But thank you for the information.

As for the “cocktail wave,” no thank you. That’s a bandwagon which I’ll let pass me by. I’ll stick to taking my whiskey neat and my lager cold.

Uh, I’ve been drinking bourbon since I’ve been drinking.

And the resurrection of the Old Fashioned is more about the cocktail wave, though Mad Men probably didn’t hurt.

I was in London recently and went to a bourbon blues bar that had waaaaay more of a bourbon selection than I’ve ever seen before (of course, they’d never even heard of Crown Royal.) They made carefully crafted old-fashioneds (?) and used real absinthe in their sazeracs. Man. That was a bar. Turned me on to the Mantini ™.

I disagree. It’s not like we’re talking about a whiskey sour here. Old fashioned ingredients are designed to bring out the flavor of the bourbon. Be a purist if you like, but scoff not. It’s unseemly.

Radley, use some cheaper grade of bourbon, say a blend, rather than Woodford for your old fashioned. Woodford is too good a single barrel to be spoiled by additives. Woodford should be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or with a splash of spring water. Preferably neat.

Interesting story: cop kills black kid in LA with a taser. Basically tasered the kid 14 times while he was handcuffed to a chair, while he and others taunted the kid and called him a nigger.

The story here is that the judge is sealing the videotape of the incident until after it’s been shown in court at the cop’s manslaughter trial. You read that right: he was charged with manslaughter. Wondering if LA has a felony-murder law, as that really sounds like felonious assault.

Of course, the standard question: why is only one of the cops being charged?
