Off topic:

The headline on nytimes.com:

<b>Shooting in Times Square Stuns Tourists</b>

<i>A plainclothes police sergeant fatally shot a man armed with a loaded semiautomatic machine pistol during a crackdown on street vendors, officials said.</i>

Semi-automatic machine pistol? Isn't that like saying semi-automatic machine gun? And, if so, isn't that a contradiction?

Luckily, the guy they killed had a note on him completely exonerating the cops of any wrongdoing.

Just kidding about that last part.

Mary and Big Texas got it.

I love it when that guy stepped off the bluff into the water with that 15K$ camera! I can only imagine the eager anticipation that both cameraman and subject enjoy as what is about to happen actually does happen. "Would ya look at that"!

<blockquote>"We'll have internal investigations look at that. ... The use of force report will tell more." -- Charleston Police Chief Brent Webster</blockquote>

Of course the police report, written BY THE POLICE, will be the truth, and that's all we need to go on. What kind of screwed up person would panic at a guy taking some pics of Santa and kids? That is a sad statement on society. The cop is great with this "it's not illegal to photo a cop unless he asks you not to." Umm .... (cough cough bullshit) ... you're in a public place, you have no protection from being photographed.

I think a case can be made that the wealthier a country is, the more oppressive the government can be. A huge powerful bureaucracy that has the manpower to regulate, monitor, and enforce laws covering even the most benign personal behavior costs money. The U.S. doesn't have the largest prison population because it's the land of the free. It has it because it's the home of the wealthy.

<blockquote>#20 MacGregory

“Photographer arrested at mall after taking holiday photos.” </blockquote>

Well, shit. The guy took a picture of a kid, for Chirist sake! A child! That alone constitutes all the probable cause needed to do anything they want short of executing the guy on the spot. I mean, consider the implications. We'll start with the worst case and work backwards. Let's suppose the guy was one of those people who get's his cookies off looking at little boys. There is evidence of that. The photographer was, after all, a guy and he was in a place where there are children. He might take those pictures home and jerk off to them. That poor kid's life would never be the same after that. How would he ever live down the shame? Wait, it gets worse. Suppose that pervert shares the picture of that kid with all his pedophile friends at the next club meeting or even publishes them on the internet. I hear pervs love kids sitiing on Santa's lap. Soon there are thousands, probably millions, of perverts jacking off to that kid's picture. Larry King interviews the child and O'Reilly does a week long exposé. Nancy Grace reports that the perp has probably photographed children in the past, making him a serial sex offender.

The risks of letting the guy escape without challenge are just too great to contemplate. The way things are these days, I'm surprised the cop didn't laugh at the complaint tell them to get a fucking grip and maybe lecture the two guys that not everything is a crime and not everyone at the mall is out to sell their kids into sexual slavery. But, we all know how the milquetoast cops hate confrontation.

Ok, so the guy wasn't a pervert (or at least he was able to play the part of a normal person). He had no business attacking the cop and threatening them by aggressively taking his picture. He brought the trouble on himself by doing something every normal person would know enough not to do. If all of you weren't such a bunch of pervert-coddling pussies, you'd be starting a petition to see to it that guy gets some serious time in the big house and a life time membership to the sex offender registry.

Hang his ass!

Sorry for the threadjack.
"Photographer arrested at mall after taking holiday photos." Actually his big mistake was trying to take a picture of the cop.

"Then he grabs my left hand and takes it around my back while Santa and the kids and everyone looked on," Rensberger said. "I'm scared to death he is going to dislocate my shoulder. I'm begging him not to do that and he responded, 'If it dislocates, I'll call the paramedics.' By no means was I trying to resist arrest."

Big Texan | December 10th, 2009 at 11:26 am
If BCS calculated World War 2:

</blockquote>

#7 ranked Russia complained that it's brutal early losses against #1 ranked Germany were taken into account separately and should have been counted as one long conflict leading to Russia's final victory. Also, their sole conquest of Hungary was not counted at all. The Russo-Finnish draw was counted against them, they continued, while neither their triumphs against Japan (1938-39 Manchuria/Mongolia campaign and their 1945 late entry campaign) were counted at all.

Hopefully Congress tackles the BCS issue.

Otherwise, they might move on to other, "more important" things such as finding a new bill to fuck up that actually affects the lives of citizens beyond how people are entertained.

<i>Barton said Congress' attention is warranted, since "at this level, college football is a multibillion-dollar business" not much different from other businesses that face congressional oversight.

"With telecommunications, you're dealing with AT&T and Verizon and Sprint, and in this case you're dealing with the SEC and the Big 12 and the Pac-10," Barton said. <b>"It's the same basic economic model."</b></i>

Is that a real quote? Radley's Twain reference is spot on.

hopefully, after congress fixes college basketball, they can move on to pro hockey- particularly the blues power play... this will be a win-win if it works out. congress will be occupied with a project that'll make my world more pleasant- without blowing anyone up or raising my taxes or violating my civil liberties or raising taxes or worrying about who's having sex with who or...
on second thought, it'll probably mean the creation of a new regulatory agency that packs guns and swat teams and has to be active to get some of that stimulus pie congress keeps cooking...
I can live with a shitty playoff system in basketball and a horrible power play for the blues.

"So just wondering but where is Deputy Adam Stoddard? "

Heat City is still covering this and it is getting even better. Now the Deputys are refusing to bring inmates to thier court hearings, and the D.A. has charged Judge Donahoe with obstruction of Justice. Awesome...

Heat City is still covering this and it is getting even better. Now the Deputys are refusing to bring inmates to thier court hearings, and the D.A. has charged Judge Donahoe with obstruction of Justice. Awesome…

Chuchundra: Without players, there's no game. But it really doesn't matter who says "Fuck you" to the agents of the state, as long as *someone* does.

Bill:

<i>It will be ironic if The Revolution came as a result of the government meddling too much in the peoples’ bread and circuses.</i>

That's the only way the proles will ever revolt. Your average citizen couldn't give two shits about their actual rights, but when you start messing with privileges like cable TV, it's Katie bar the door.

While that big brother list was interesting, #16 seems somewhat out of place, for that matter so perhaps is #17. So evolution is required teaching, isn't the theory of gravity required teaching? There are lots of scientific theories that are required if your going to get anywhere in a science course.

Even if you disagree with evolution it seems strange that you wouldn't want to learn about it just so you can mock it later.

I hate the BCS as much as the next person, but seriously congress mandates playoffs. Give me a break. Here is a funny email I got once concerning the BCS: If BCS calculated World War 2:

After determining the Big-12 championship game participants the BCS computers were put to work on other major contests and today the BCS declared Germany to be the winner of World War II.

“Germany put together an incredible number of victories beginning with the annexation of Austria and the Sudetenland and continuing on into conference play with defeats of Poland, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands. Their only losses came against the US and Russia; however considering their entire body of work—including an incredibly tough Strength of Schedule—our computers deemed them worthy of the #1 ranking.”

Questioned about the #4 ranking of the United States the BCS commissioner stated “The US only had two major victories— Japan and Germany . The computer models, unlike humans, aren’t influenced by head-to-head contests—they consider each contest to be only a single, equally-weighted event.”

German Chancellor Adolph Hiter said “Yes, we lost to the US ; but we defeated #2 ranked France in only 6 weeks.” Herr Hitler has been criticized for seeking dramatic victories to earn ‘style points’ to enhance Germany ’s rankings. Hitler protested “Our contest with Poland was in doubt until the final day and the conditions in Norway were incredibly challenging and demanded the application of additional forces.”

The French ranking has also come under scrutiny. The BCS commented ” France had a single loss against Germany and following a preseason #1 ranking they only fell to #2.”

Japan was ranked #3 with victories including Manchuria, Borneo and the Philippines.

I'm not sure if I believe the story about the Iraqi Cab Drive. I know that the gov't is grossly incompetent, so I'm pretty accepting of it at first glance.

But I just can't imagine that any self respecting member of the intelligence organizations in the US or UK would even take that information seriously enough to even make record of it. That just seems too ridiculous. Doesn't it? I know the old saying is the ends justify the means, but they could have just made shit up that is more credible than a cab driver.
