I think they just assume their readers are comfortable with British spelling. I live in the US and my subscription copy of The Economist always uses British spelling, so I assume it's the same edition that people in the UK read. While I think it's great for your work to get international exposure (especially in the U.K. where they seem oblivious to the erosion of their civil liberties) I hope it's also being featured in the domestic edition.
