My Interview With the Economist

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

Last week, the Economist was kind of enough to ask for my rambling thoughts on criminal justice, some of my reporting, and libertarianism.

You can read the interview here.

The magazine also gave the blog you’re reading a nice endorsement, calling it “…a must read for anyone with a healthy scepticism of the government’s activities.”

That is awesome – you’ve just been quoted in what is by far the world’s best news magazine.

I’ve subscribed to The Economist for years. It’s the only news magazine worth reading, the only one I subscribe to and the only one I recommend to others.

By the way, I think you unintentionally omitted the word “read” from the second sentence of your post.

Very cool. Lots of ground covered and you did a nice job of summing everything up. I’ve forwarded your interview on to a bunch of friends.

Wow, very nice summary of a lot of libertarian points in a small space. And it’s nice to see you get recognized for your investigative work.

Was the interview itself intended for an international audience (I noticed no period after “Mr” and the spelling of “organisation”) or did you just happen to link to the international edition of the Economist magazine? While I think it’s great for your work to get international exposure (especially in the U.K. where they seem oblivious to the erosion of their civil liberties) I hope it’s also being featured in the domestic edition.

The rest of the world is catching on to what Theagitator.com, Reason Magazine and Reason.com readers have known for years. Radley Balko is are an exceptional journalist and effective communicator of libertarian ideas/ideals.

    Keep on truckin’ dude.

Great interview, and I passed it on to others. Sorry you had to mention Mississippi, but you were certainly right to do so. Thanks again for railing against injustice.

I’m not sure there are separate editions of the The Economist. I think they just assume their readers are comfortable with British spelling. I live in the US and my subscription copy of The Economist always uses British spelling, so I assume it’s the same edition that people in the UK read.

Reminds me of one of my favorite Onion point/counterpoints:

    Counterpoint in particular.

Good Stuff, and uh, wow Radley, you’re really making a name for yourself. I mean you are really one of the pioneers and becoming the gold standard for the new media.

    Well deserved,

There are separate editions, but the only difference are the covers. And to me it makes no sense to read British magazines with American English.

Cornellian and AndrĂ©, thanks for clarifications. I hope you’ll excuse my ignorance, as I gave up on reading magazines when MAD started running ads.
