Your comments are spot on. One of the most unfortunate legacies of the Reagan administration is the acceleration of the Drug War, and Ed Meese was a prime mover. Furthermore, he did nothing to reign in the predations of Rudy Giuliani, and neither did Richard Thornburgh, who also seems to have had a “Road to Damascus” change.
It was Thornburgh who quipped “a brother for a brother” when Giuliani threatened to indict Michael Milken’s brother, Lowell, if Michael did not plead guilty to what the Supreme Court later said were not crimes at all. While I am glad to see these people coming around, I must admit that the time to respect the law is when one is in charge of enforcing it.
