Mojopin: Many liberatarians see “intellectual property” as pure government fiat, not founded in any natural rights. If the proper function of government is to protect rather than limit our freedom, that should include the freedom to write whatever you want on a piece of paper and sell it for whatever price you can get.

Infringing on my copyright “neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.” It deprives me of nothing which I had otherwise. Its only effect on me is to reduce the potential market for my own sales- but I can not ever have a property interest in the future behavior of potential buyers.

If we imagine a pre-legal society based purely on intuitive, natural rights, we can easily imagine that Grog the caveman will violently object if you try to steal his best spear or murder his child. If we try to imagine Grog’s reaction to you building a mud idol which looks just like his, it’s not at all clear that he would feel the same sense of righteous affront.

I respect your anti-authoritarian sentiment, but I have always wondered why some of my closest libertarian friends have such qualms with copyright and trademark laws. If there is a legitimate function of government in a libertarian utopia, I have always thought it would be protection of “intellectual” property.

Maybe I just need new friends.

Anything Dr. Funkenstein wins in any venue on any planet is deserved. He has kept us safe from Sir Nose D’Voidoffunk for years. He should get a percentage of every hip-hop record sold since 1982. His influence on poplular music over the last several decades cannot be overstated.

I’m relatively young (34) and seen Parliament/Funkadelic in concert 4 times. Once at Seattle Bumbershoot festival where he played for 4 hours. I also saw him last year at the Showbox, a small club where he played for 3 hours. Considering his age, quite a feat. Compare him rocking crowds for $20 club tickets for 3 hours versus over-rated “legends” like The Police, Eagles, Aerosmith or Fleetwood Mac- bands who hate each other but get together to ass-rape their fans wallets with “reunion” tours.

All hail captain of the Mothership.

Technically I think Eazy-E beat you to the punch everyone to the punch, although the words were originally for Dr. Dre and Snoop, they ring true as a response to copyright infrigement police, especially since Eazy is in the great hereafter:

While I can understand “bow wow wow, yippie yo, yippie yea” being unique enought to be protected ( in the context of a song lyric ), I can’t agree with the use of “Dog” being protected. And I’m a GC fan.
