Quote of the Day, 2

Saturday, November 14th, 2009

“You ever watch that TV series ‘Mad Men?’ If I keep watching this program, will I ever find a happy person? Great television. Good drama. But . . the way women were treated is appalling, and only occasionally funny to me.”

Bill Clinton, who makes Roger Sterling look like Alan Alda.

Obligatory disclaimer: I like Bill Clinton. I think he’s probably the best president of my lifetime (which admittedly isn’t saying much). But come on. Coming from him, this quote is hilarious. Especially the “only occasionally funny to me” part.

You like Bill Clinton? Best president of your lifetime? OK, fine, it’s your choice to think so. But I would love to hear why.

Sigh. I don’t understand how anyone who calls himself a libertarian can prefer Bill Clinton to Ronald Reagan. As someone who remembers the Carter years, I know Reagan was a great president. And for those of us with libertarian leanings, he was possibly a once in a lifetime gift.

It was Reagan’s inaugural address is filled with sentiments such as “our present troubles parallel and are proportionate to the intervention and intrusion in our lives that result from unnecessary and excessive growth of government.” http://www.bartleby.com/124/pres61.html

Bill Clinton on the other hand began his presidency wanting “to make our government a place for what Franklin Roosevelt called ‘bold, persistent experimentation,’ a government for our tomorrows, not our yesterdays.” The only reason he was successful was he had an opposition Congress to rein him in.

OK, typo above. “It was Reagan’s inaugural address _that_ is filled with sentiments…”

But a second post also is an opportunity to quote his wonderful line “In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.”

    Better than Reagan?

    Wow! Radley,

“You like Bill Clinton”? yeah I too would like to know your reasoning on this one.
Please remember that fucking liar who “didn’t inhale”, “Did not have sex with that woman.”, “depends on what the meaning of is is.” and the scumbag in chief who oversaw the mass murder of American citizens a la Waco!!!
    Please explain.
As a Libertarian you should be outraged at him.

At least Clinton had a brain. And a penis.

Although he probably didn’t get as much pussy as JFK.

I like his choice in females, tho. IMO, Monica Lewinsky is HAWT.

If I were POTUS, I’d want to be getting as much pussy as possible to keep my fucking head on straight.

@Andrew – all that blood rushing down there tends to make one light-headed and dizzy, which usually precludes rational thought – for the good of us all, pussy should be banned from the White House…

Wasn’t Ford in office during your lifetime? Ford cut taxes, refused to bail out New York City, continued detente with Chiner and Russia, vetoed 66 bills in his 29 months in office. All that vs. Clinton? Jesus Radley the murders at Waco alone should keep him off the top of any such list. Add to that the Communications Decency Act, the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996, whoring out the Lincoln Bedroom and the office itself – remember the “trade missions”, “coffee’s”?

Talk to Tim Lynch or Gene Healy on this – they’ll let you know, Ford is the man. Also, Reagan kicks Clinton’s ass for not being a scumbag piece of shit, no matter his policies.

I know I’m dating myself, but:

    I like Ike.

Appalling treatment of women on Mad Men is ALWAYS funny.

I liked Bush the Elder. Seemed like a decent guy.

I think Clinton wishes he were Don Draper. And who could blame him?

  14. #14 |  random guy |

I was born during the second Reagan administration.
That is all I have to say about that.

Nice post Drega. And don’t forget Clinton selling all of our technology to China. China couldn’t reliably launch a rocket in 1993, and today they could take out our major cities thanks to Clinton and his gang.

Geez – I go with Reagan hands down – from 1977 on or from 1877 on.

I agree with Clinton about there being no happy people on the show – that’s why I can’t watch it.

  17. #17 |  Carl Drega |

I can’t believe I totally forgot that he RAPED Juanita Broaddrick. Now he didn’t do so while in office if you want to get technical, but seriously Clinton… WTF Radley.

  18. #18 |  Eric |

calling bullshit on Radley. I would love to hear his reasoning…

  19. #19 |  Radley Balko |

I’ve explained a number of times why I think Clinton was the best president in my lifetime. Not getting into it here. Do a search.

That doesn’t excuse his personal behavior, which was sort of the point of this post.

Huh… I LIKED Mad Men… but then, I’m a Gorean. Spank ‘em some more! They like it, honest!

Clinton was the only president that made the national debt clock run backwards. The best economy in the history of the world occurred on his watch. The last time unemployment was this high, 1983, when your hero was in office. Reagan also greatly expanded the size of government, the war on drugs, and the national debt. Reagan looked like a great president because of the 17 years of rotten presidents before him. Nixon had wage controls for Christ’s sake.

“Clinton was the only president that made the national debt clock run backwards. ”

I bet you think that the government creates jobs.

“I bet you think that the government creates jobs.”

Yeah, adam, the idea that the national debt has anything to do with the federal budget seems woefully naive.
