Math Nerd Invokes Tank Man

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Encouraging story from Iran, where star math student Mahmoud Vahidnia confronted Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on national television last week, challenging Khamenei on free press, free expression, and the crackdown on last summer’s protests.

More encouraging, a week later Vahinia appears to remain not only alive, but free from a jail cell.

The serf continues to be allowed to live at the pleasure of the king.

That the king did not decide to revoke that permission does not diminish that fact.

Firstly, this link suggests that he *has* disappeared now:

Secondly, just because it fits this site…

‘The prosecutors counter that there is “no freestanding constitutional right not to be framed.” ‘

Hope that first link is older than the update saying he’s fine on Radley’s, but in any case I wish Vahidnia luck.

I think we have discussed this here before Radley, but no one should ever use the phrase “truth to power” unless they are doing something along the lines of what this nerd (compliment) did. That guy is literally my hero.

Iran will enjoy a stable representative government before Iraq or Afghanistan as long as we stay the hell out of it.

Echoing everybody else praising the young man’s bravery.

This troubling story about a 13-yr-old sentenced to LWOP in Florida is probably right up Radley’s alley. http://www.slate.com/id/2234594

    Also, props to math nerd.

If you’re speaking nerd-to-nerd, the correct phrasing is “Live long and prosper.”

Which, seriously, is what I wish for this guy. And I second Eric’s comment at 1:31.

“…as long as we stay the hell out of it.”

The US will stay the hell out of Iran as long as it is politically advantageous to stay the hell out of it. If political gold can be made (maybe the pistaccio cartel pays for some tired DC hookers), then a lot of people will die.

Not to be Mr. Obvious, but a lot of people are already dying in Iran, and will continue to do so until they change governments. It’s not a question of people dying, it’s a question of how many. In case you’re unaware, trying googling “homosexual iran execution” for an example.

Are you suggesting congress may be in the pocket of the nut-mafia?

I would have loved to see someone harangue Bush for 20 minutes over intrusions into civil liberties and wars started for spurious reasons based on zero evidence. I would argue that Obama deserves the same treatment, esp. given how many times he’s invoked executive priviledge since coming into office.

That young man has more guts than I have.
