Instead of comparing the price of Cadillacs, I think a better way of comparing the value of the dollar over the years would be to look at the income required to maintain a certain lifestyle. Fitzgerald’s $24,000 lifestyle in modern dollars wouldn’t require twenty or thirty times the income, but more like 100 times as much: at least $2.5 million a year for such an estate, fully staffed with servents, hosting so many parties, combined with so much overseas luxury travel.

That means a Calvin Coolidge dollar isn’t worth a nickel today, it’s barely worth a penny.
