Naked Coffee Guy Update
Wednesday, October 21st, 2009Some new developments in the story of Eric Williamson, the Virginia man arrested after a neighbor spotted him nude in his own home yesterday morning.
The woman who called the police says the time of the incident was 8:40 am, not 5:30 am as Williamson says. She also says Williamson was first standing in an open doorway, then moved in front of a window, still in her view. Given that she was apparently on his property (that part of the story hasn’t yet been disputed), and he was in his home the entire time, I’m not sure his exact position in his own home matters, unless he was otherwise in plain view of someone using the public sidewalk. Even then, it seems more like tacky behavior than behavior that should be criminal. And you’d think the guy would get a warning before you arrest him for nudity in his own house.
Williamson told Fox News today (auto video play and browser resize warning) that after the report, 5-6 police officers came into his home unannounced, entered his bedroom, and arrested him.
The guy does seem strange. A roommate says he was acting oddly, walking around all morning wearing nothing but a construction hat. But again, strange behavior needn’t be a crime punishable by a year in jail (if the roommate had reported unwanted nudity, that might be a different matter). Seems like a sensible policy would be that once you walk into someone’s yard and look inside their home, you can’t claim to be victimized by what you might see.
I’m sure more will come out in the coming days. In the meantime, enjoy the weird “random naked torso” graphic D.C.’s NBC affiliiate chose to run with the story.

“Roommate reported unwanted nudity” … the answer is too bad, roommate, a person has a right to do what they want, even if they are your roommate, so long as they aren’t in your private space.
2 years ago an Oregon man in Rainier walked around outside on his property near a school bus stop. Parents didn’t like it, but police CORRECTLY said there is nothing they can do about it unless he is doing sexual acts, etc.

I might be acting a little weird too if I’d just been fired. I listened to the FOX News interview and he just sounded bewildered about the whole thing, as anyone would be. It also sounded like he was thinking about a lot of things that morning, trying to regroup and figure out what to do.
If you don’t want to look , don’t look. If the guy’s not on his property, in his own house, it’s his business and MYOB.
OTOH, this Oregon guy sounds a little strange. Esp. if it’s true about the child porn. If that’s all true, then the neighbors need to get a pic of him exciting himself in view of children/adults and give it to the cops. That, friends and neighbors, is a little thing we likes to call EVIDENCE.
Maybe then the Oregon guy could move to where that nice lady is starting a daycare center “for the children.”

Obivously I meant “if the guy’s ON his own property.” Sheesh.
At first I was taken aback that 5-6 cops would enter his house without being invited to arrest him for being naked, but then I read that the guy was acting oddly, so I guess it’s ok. What’s the recommended sentence for being naked, anyway? And is acting oddly an aggravating circumstance that would increase the length of the prison term?
I have no sympathy for this guy. It’s not like people just walk around naked by accident. This was clearly premeditated and shows a complete disregard for health and welfare of the entire community. The guy should definitely have to undergo psychiatric treatment and then they fry his ass to make an example out of him. His entire estate should then be transferred to the woman and her daughter as a first step in their long struggle to mend their shattered lives.
Dave K, you are maxing out my sarcasm meter. Third time this week I’ve had to send it in to be reset.
Looking like a long haired bearded psycho doesn’t help his cause. Something doesn’t smell right here, not coffee, more like buttcrack
Where’s the trespassing charge!!! Anyway, I hope you keep up with this story. I really want to know how it turns out.
“A roommate says he was acting oddly, walking around all morning wearing nothing but a construction hat.”
This is all just a misunderstanding. The guy is obviously a former member of The Village People.
Sorry, I don’t buy it. In *all* of the interviews he appears to be credible. Even if he stood in his doorway nude and moved to the front window, it remains his home. Deploying a 5-6 man police squad to arrest this guy is still over-reaching. A knock at the door, by one officer, delivering a warning is a sane, measured and reasonable first response.
I thought they called people who peered into other’s windows ‘peeping toms’ and that it was against the law. I guess I was mistaken.
Sane, measured and reasonable just doesn’t go with government worker.
If he’s a commercial diver, it’s possible he’s been suffering some neurological side-affects of his job. Since he has a full beard, I assume he’s a hard hat diver, which means he relies on someone else to feed him his air supply. Whether he’s breathing mixed gases or straight air might be a factor, not to mention what depths he works, and his ratio of deep time to surface time.
But still: being nude, absent any overt sexual act, should never be a crime.
Too many commentators here seem fine with his nudity as long as he stays within his home. Freedom is for all of you, but not the other guy??? Anyway, who cares if he was nude ANYWHERE. Nudity is not an “indecent” act. YOUR minds like to twist nudity into a sexual act, which it is not, (but even if it was, why is a sexual act considered “indecent”? Isn’t everyone here because their parents performed this supposedly “indecent” act?) Grow up folks, it’s that twist in YOUR mind that claims nudity, (or sex itself), is somehow indecent. His nudity doesn’t pick my pocket or reach my nose. If there is someone here who thinks it does, please make your case how you, (or this woman and son), have suffered loss as a victim? Or did I enter a room full of “citizens” who want to be “protected” by the state from being offended?
I’m naked typing this right now.
It is 7:50 am, and I’m at work, but is it so wrong?
The hot HR lady just walked by, and looked at me.
She shrugged her shoulders, and said “It is no big deal”.
Should I be offended?
i wonder why the police didn’t taze him. that could be the joke for months in the police squad room.
Exactly! Exceptionally well said.
I can’t fathom the kind of mind that would criminalize simple nudity in public or private. It’s irrational to the point of absolute absurdity and yet most people don’t give such laws a second thought. After all, it’s not something they would do, so why should they care, right?
But, even those who would not criminalize nudity, would almost universally draw the line at sex (and that includes almost all libertarians). You see it all the time. Expression that portrays simple nudity is considered acceptable while any public portrayal of sex is, at best, without much value and most often a perfectly legitimate target for regulation and control. And, of course, the “sex industry”, where it’s permitted to exist, is nothing more than employment for depraved exploitative lowlifes.
But, the truth is that, sex, as it is usually practiced, is the relatively harmless “pursuit of happiness” in one of its purist forms and is, therefore, a basic right that shouldn’t be infringed by the government.
Someday, the world is going to wake up to the act that sex is not shameful, doesn’t injure others, and does not deserve to be criminalized.
Hahahahaha! Just kidding about that last part. That will never happen. People derive way too much self-righteous satisfaction from their hypocritical dirty-minded perspective for them to ever abandon it in favor of a healthy live and let live attitude.
I thought he was pretty good lookin (though I prefer baldie)….I wouldn’t mind getting a peek at his junk!
The punishment needs to fit the crime. For the crime of her seeing him naked, he should be punished by seeing HER naked.
@ Mike # 19 – Reparations!
I’ve got no problem with nudie bars, nude beaches, and nudity in the home (duh). But if you are out on a public street, bus, or subway, put on some freaking pants! There has got to be a happy medium somewhere.
The plot thickens…
DC Fox News 5 is now reporting that:
1. Williamson’s house is across the street from a school bus stop.
2. The police are canvasing the area with flyers asking people who may have seen him naked to step forward.
3. Williamson’s ex-roommates think he may have been drunk or hungover.
4. The complaint that started this was filed by an upstanding member of the community, the wife of a Fairfax county police officer.
I am all for walking around naked in your own home and property rights, but these issues are very fact specific. There are just not enough facts to figure out if this is police overreach or a guy trying to offend kids waiting for the school bus.
At least the old Oregon guy has a big yard.
Hmmm.
Nudity should not be a crime, but exposing your genitals to intentionally offend kids at the school bus stop is not right either. I just do not know if that was the case here.
If someone can be arrested for how they look, then don’t be surprised that they can be arrested for what they say.
Nudity is not a crime. It can pretty gross, but it’s not a crime. If it’s so detramental, how did our ancestors ever manage to make it out of the caves and create civilization? I don’t understand the reasoning that makes people believe that naked adults somehow creates serial killers and alcoholics out of our youth.
Kids definitely shouldn’t be allowed to see genitals. I mean we’re talking about genitals for Christ sake. GENITALS! Can you fuckin’ imagine the chaos that would ensue if children were allowed to see naked people? I mean, shit. Without those laws we’d be like some of those backward countries in Europe for Christ sake! EUROPE!
Hey, not everyone wants to work for a living. Setting yourself up to bait the prudes and collecting wrongful prosecution lawsuit settlements may turn out to be quite lucrative for all we know.
Dave Kreuger “Someday, the world is going to wake up to the act that sex is not shameful, doesn’t injure others, and does not deserve to be criminalized.

hahahaha…brilliant!
As I said, nudity is fine on private property, or in public places where it is customary (nude beach, spa, etc.). The question is whether you should be forced to interact with naked people in close proximity, as can happen when you are out in public.
I’m guessing that if Williamson looked like (or was) Matthew McConaughey, he would have gotten away with being seen naked in his own house.
He probably could have gotten away with playing the bongos too.
And getting stoned.
I know for a fact my wife would have given him a pass.
First off, I’m a card-carrying, dues-paying member of the American Association for Nude Recreation;

Also, I interact with other nudists on Skinbook (essentially Facebook for nudists);

Today I noticed that one of the members has called for a World Nude Coffee Day, October 24th, 5:30am to 12:00pm. I don’t know if this came about because of the Naked Coffee Guy, but I took the opportunity to 1) sign up for the event, and 2) share the link to The Agitator with my fellow nudists. Event is open to first-timers, y’all!
World Nude Coffee Day, October 24th
On my birthday. How perfect.
strange behavior needn’t be a crime punishable by a year in jail (if the roommate had reported unwanted nudity, that might be a different matter).
Was it a provision in the lease? If not, how could a roommate press criminal charges for seeing another roommate naked? Jeez.
A nude volleyball league…..just putting it out there for consideration.
“4. The complaint that started this was filed by an upstanding member of the community, the wife of a Fairfax county police officer.”
Um,,,the woman that lives across the street from me is the wife of a police officer, and she’s nuttier than the squirrel that lives in my tree.
“Today I noticed that one of the members has called for a World Nude Coffee Day, October 24th, 5:30am to 12:00pm.”
Whaddya know … on my birthday no less!
Guess I’ll have to dust off that old birthday suit.
#22 Well that explains the full-court press and the non-charging of the bitch. “All animals are equal. But some animals are more equal than others.”
Was George prescient when he made the fascist animals pigs?
Happy birthday (a day early), Cynical. Be sure to report back about any birthday suit adventures (although, we’ll presumably see the news coverage).
I consider birthdays to be the one special day of the year for which you should do something completely out of the ordinary. For example, I set it aside as my once-a-year holiday from drinking and womanizing.
A Yom Kippur of sorts for you Dave. Bravo!
Happy Birthday Oatwhore! We share the same birthday!
An interesting experiment in statistics and probability goes like this:
Since there are 365 different possible birthdays in a given year (excluding leap years), then because (20×20)>365, then the likelihood that any two given individuals in a sample set of 20 share the same birthday becomes almost statistically guaranteed.
Try it with your friends at your next party! Try it at a bar with perfect strangers! I’ve never had it fail yet and its a pretty good icebreaker. You can really amaze mathematically ignorant people and last time I checked there’s no shortage of those.
Update: If you live in New England, late October is a lousy time to have a World Naked Coffee Day. I made coffee naked, drank it naked,… then got dressed.
Jeez, I may be “unique”, but I’m not crazy!
Serious this new’s report is a discrace and a challenge in ethic’s amnd reform in heathcode’s and viloation’s of code’s and penal Code’s.
