My crime column this week looks at the awful new show The Police Women of Broward County.

I saw 10 minutes of that garbage the other day. Some “look how tough I am” policebitch pulled a guy over for nothing more than driving in an area frequented by hookers. She forced him out of the car, then forced him, on camera, to admit that he was on that street hoping to find a hooker. Then she let him go, because neither driving on that street nor unsuccessfully looking for hookers is a crime.

She told him if she ever saw him on this street again, though, she would arrest him. For what policebitch? If it wasn’t a crime this time, its not a crime next time. Wonder what actual crimes went down while you were harassing a man who had done nothing illegal just to show the world how big your dick was?

I’ve seen the ads for this show – I was completely turned off (Charlie’s Angels in Uniform!). This type of show makes me want to puke! I much prefer COPS, Speeders, and especially The First 48, and Crime 360. The last two because it starts with a crime and follows detectives trying to solve it (not always successfully).
I’ve heard of DEA – but would never watch it. I’ll admit to watching the SWAT shows (love KC Swat for the interaction of the two Sgts) but yell alot at the TV about their tactics.

On the bright side, if she ever does taser someone illegally, seems like this ad campaign would be pretty good lawyer fodder for the civil suit.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy violent television shows…that are fictional. I’m not sure how I feel about glorifying actual violence, especially at the hands of law enforcement. Is this show suppose to make us like cops more? Maybe this is really part of a plot to further undermine our trust in authority.

Reno 911 remains the only decent cop show and I rarely watch it.

Just what TV needs,3 female, foul mouthed, control freaks.

Personally, I’d rather watch hot chicks get naked than watch them taze somebody. Can we please get this show on TLC?

Also, has anyone else thought how ironic it is that shows like this and the Clown Car family (the duggars, creationists) are on a network called The Learning Channel?

There is something I noticed from watching COPS. Female cops tend to resort to their weapons much faster than men would, and with much less provocation. I wish we had some statistics on this.

Caught about 5 minutes of this crapfest the other day. Some smug blond bimbo joking to a guy with yayo in his trunk about how much he was going to enjoy the local jailhouse amenities. She and her cronies seemed to have a great time laughing about the effective end of this guy’s life.

Radley is dead-on about the identity crisis too. Are these women supposed to fit right in with “the guys”, or are they supposed to make “it” move even while they slap on the cuffs?

The glorification of disgustingly obvious police contempt for citizens — this time perpetrated by MILFs!!! — ultimately made me turn the channel.

I refuse to dive this show even 15 seconds of my time, but the ads are all over NYC and it sucks. COPS is still the benchmark which all other shows fail to live up to — not every segment ends with an arrest or “I’m giving you a break this time….”

The revolution may not be televised, but the brutal state reprisal of it will be.

How dare you criticize these NAZI bee-ches and their
    shiny new torture devices!
    That’s just un-American!

I gave up on watching those reality cop shows after getting burned out on many years of COPS. Now, just about the only show I watch is Planet Green’s “Living with Ed” on my 52in Sony flat screen TV that I drove 80 miles one way to buy at Sam’s Club…… 8-)

I like the First 48, but I always root for the suspects to lawyer up, just on principle. A lot of times the detectives on that show will say “we need a confession” even though they have mounds of physical evidence.

Hey, better than intimidating a suspect into a confession when they don’t have said mounds of evidence. If they “need” a confession, they don’t have jack. If they have something, they don’t need anything from you. Either way, get a lawyer.

Strap on Chris, strap on…unless you’re suggesting these women are transexuals.

I propose a new show, which shows all the feeds of people being treated like sh*t by cops, and focusses on these people, instead of the cops.

  17. #17 |  Chris in AL |

I don’t know Steve, she had quite the Adam’s apple, lol.

My Aunt was a cop for 30 years. And she is tough as nails. So tough, she wouldn’t have to go out of her way to ‘prove it’ like these whackjobs on this show. Being a female cop may be tough, but being a ‘tough female cop’ doesn’t have to be the cliche braggadocio that is this show.

But this is what our society has become. Apparently, this is what we crave. We occasionally hear a story about an athlete that is all class, but it is still the TO’s and Ocho Cinkos (what a joke) that get all the media play. We pretend we value good character, but we reward the braggarts and the obnoxious.

But I guess nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American tv viewing public.

Is TLC even called The Learning Channel anymore? For years I’ve known it as “The Ladies Channel.” Even the home improvement shows on that channel are more about feelings and relationships than actual substance!

  19. #19 |  Chris in AL |

    @ Scared Stiff

Agreed. Nothing educational about The Learning Channel anymore. The one channel I still give some credibility to is the History Channel. They still put on some decent programming. But while I used to be able to just leave it on and find pretty much whatever they showed interesting, now you have to find the good shows hidden amongst all the MonsterQuest and Gangland and Ice Road Truckers and Axe Men and Watery Axe Men and all the other non-history related crap they program. And again, I don’t really blame the channel. They give the viewers what they want. And the viewers want sensational, “I’m a wolf and not a sheep!” garbage. Not history.

Must be your first time here, arglebargle. If you read this site regularly, you’ll understand that if a cop does it, it’s not illegal.

But maybe you’re right about the civil suit. A plaintiff might be awarded a few movie tickets or something. Maybe.

I prefer the policewomen of Reno 911 myself.

    Neicy. Mmm mmm mmm. Bootaylicious.

Chris in AL, I Totally and completely agree with you regarding the ‘History’ channel.

Also, I’ve always wondered why TruTV (the non-stop police glorification channel) wasn’t more accurately named… “PigTV?”

Well, there must be some fools out there that get off on that crap.

  23. #23 |  Peter Ramins |

Next year it will be a show called “Ass”.

Ninety minutes of a naked ass farting, with commercial breaks for Carl’s Junior and Star*ucks.

My friend and I recently decided to spend Labor Day weekend in South Florida. We considered Ft. Lauderdale (in Broward County) and Miami Beach (not in Broward County). After seeing the ads for this appalling new show, we are not going anywhere near Ft. Lauderdale.

In addition, I am writing a letter to the Broward County visitors bureau (www.sunny.org) to let them know that I will not spend any money in Broward County specifically because of the glamorization of tasers and police oppression. I don’t want to be tased by some policewoman showing off for the camera.

If more people explain to Broward County (a county heavily dependent on tourism) that they will not come to the county or spend money in the county because of this show then maybe (maybe) the show will disappear.

(I estimate that my friend and I will spend approximately $400-$500 each this weekend; I want Broward County to know exactly what they are losing.)

I haven’t watched television directly in years. Now, thanks to Netflix, I select which shows I watch and watch them that way. No commercials, no cable, and I get 2 to 4 episodes/disk (British shows have less commercials and tend to be a bit longer and less frequent so fewer episodes/disk).

Must be your first time here, arglebargle. If you read this site regularly, you’ll understand that if a cop does it, it’s not illegal.

That’s right. Now…arglebargle its Guiliani time!

Heh, well we do live in CA Cynical, maybe we can start a porn series or something. Heck, I bet we can even get real female cops.

I watched 20 min of DEA in a bizarre setting: at a sushi restaurant on a huge monitor 20′ in front of our table.

It’d be better if *every* SWAT raid was required to be filmed for public record.

Thank you for the excellent reporting, Radley. By exposing this disgusting expoitative shit, and the underside of American policing, you are actually doing law enforcement a service. Many LEO’s may not see it that way now, but as a potential recruit (maybe), and a former criminal justice major, I really feel that way. Thanks for trying to take the LEO trash out, so that people like me may have a chance one day to serve with honor.
