The Correct Answer Is “George”

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

Someone asked me the question the other night.

If you say John, you take yourself far too seriously. If you say Ringo, you’re trying to be funny. If you say Paul, you’re kind of the joke. So the correct answer is “George.”

Also, if the question is “Stones or Beatles?”, the correct answer is “The Who.”

you probably shouldn’t even be discussing those schmoes. the question should have been framed around The Band.

  3. #3 |  Cornellian |

The correct answer is “Led Zeppelin.”

  4. #4 |  Johnny Longtorso |

The correct answer is, as always, Peter Scolari.

  5. #5 |  Todd |

I have always liked The Who and Zep more than The Stones and Beatles.

  6. #6 |  Boyd Durkin |

    Zeppelin. Not even close.

  7. #7 |  Parkylondon |

True. As a life-long Who and Zep fan I’d go for The Who…

  8. #8 |  John Jenkins |

The Kinks are a step above all of them, artistically and acoustically.

The Dave Clark Five rocked harder than any of ‘em, at least until Townsend discovered the ear-destroying virtues of Mesa Boogie amplification.

Of the next generation of “British” bands — or, at least hybrid bands from the Isles — nobody compares to Thin Lizzy (its original four-piece line-up had two Irishmen, a Scot, and an American named Scott).

I hasten to clarify that the DC 5 rocked harder than the original British invasion bands. Zep is a COMPLETELY different proposition, obviously.

Sha na na. You know it’s true deep in your heart.

Does it disqualify me if I actually like The Beatles, The Who, The Band, The Kinks, Led Zeppelin, AND The Rolling Stones ?

  13. #13 |  Dan |

    Yes

  14. #14 |  Fascist Nation |

Damn Grigg, were you spinning records in an earlier life?! You recall and reminisce bands like a long time DJ. That’s a good thing.

I thought it always came down to the yardbirds…

    Two words for you simpletons:

    Pink. Floyd.

  17. #17 |  Ryan |

    Stu Sutcliffe.

  18. #18 |  Brandon Bowers |

    Marley. Enough said.

  19. #19 |  Walt |

    Bing Crosby.

Sorry…gotta go with Ringo on this one. Highly underrated as a drummer (though Paul’s bass playing is also generally overlooked). If you make jokes about Ringo, you’re trying to be funny but that’s about it.

Stones/Beatles – Stones by far, no contest. The Who rocked but only here and there (admittedly, the Stones went downhill but during their early/middle period – thru Exile – they were unstoppable). The Beatles are highly overrated.

Anyway, they’re all kid’s stuff compared to Zappa, so suck on that.

No. It does date you. ;-)

    Regarding British invasion bands -

No love for Herman’s Hermits? I knew there was a reason I liked you guys.

    The Creatures

    The New Originals
    The Thamesmen

Perceptive comment on the DC5. *Hard* rockin’ band and Dave himself was easily one of the shrewdest financial wizards among the musicians of the day–and Mike Smith was a terrific, very skilled rock vocalist (don’t believe me? Just try to sing his material).

Mind you, as much as I think people who would say Lennon was the “best” Beatle are (at least judging by post-beatles output and considering all-around musical ability), plain flat wrong–just on the vocals front you sure can make a strong case that no other “first Invasion” singer came even close when it comes to making a huge range of types material work.

The British Invasion bands in order of how much I listen to them (and why)

    The Who (most rockin’)
    The Kinks (best lyrics)
The Stones (In their youth, most awesome blues)
The Yardbirds (The three, count ‘em, three best guitarists)
The Beatles (Best produced, best arrangements and best packaged)

Zeppelin and Cream are 2nd generation, they don’t count.

  26. #26 |  ktc2 |

    Pink Floyd
    Led Zeppelin
    Black Sabbath

Thought I was going to be the first smartarse, but clearly there;s a lot more smartarses here…

…anyway, the correct answer is “13th Floor Elevators”

  28. #28 |  Tsu Dho Nihm |

The correct answer is clearly the ’72 Super Beetle.

Tangentially related to the topic at hand -

I have this in my collection and give it a spin from time to time.

Some would include her as part of the British Invasion. YMMV.

It may just be an old fart thingee.

If by The Who, you mean The Kinks, I agree. ;-)

Although I am going to ask my wife for a DVD of The Kids are Alright special edition for my birthday.

  33. #33 |  Jesse Walker |

If you say George, you probably take yourself too seriously as well. Unless you mean George Martin, which is the real correct answer, though I’m personally going to persist in saying “Ringo.”

  34. #34 |  Otter |

    Cholling….

    NICE Dead Milkmen reference!

  35. #35 |  Rhayader |

@Jesse Walker: Yeah props to George Martin.

In terms of the actual Fab Four, I’d have to say Lennon. But I’ll qualify that by saying it’s the cynical, sarcastic, selfish Lennon. Not the sit-in Yoko ornament.

  36. #36 |  Brian N. |

I’d say ‘Peter’ as in Hammill, not Gabriel or Best. I think I get two points for obscurity.

  37. #37 |  Spartan |

Great choices all, but every guitarist in every band mentioned here is still in the shadow of Jimi freakin Hendrix.

  38. #38 |  Ed Darrell |

    George Martin
