Morning Links

  • Pete Hoekstra is a meme.
  • More great photos from abandoned places.
  • “She’s clean, perfectly normal and drama-free.” Hmm. Somehow, I doubt that. (Link may be NSFW.)
  • “Sleep tourism.” As one who possesses uncanny napping skills, I’d love to try the igloo sleep.
  • Conor Friedersdorf takes on right-wing talk radio.
  • Some of you asked why Iranian police have “Police” printed on the uniforms in English. Here’s your answer.

The Pete Hoekstra link busted me up, now I know what it feels like to get pulled over by the Oklahoma state police….

Craigslist ad has been removed :(

The abandoned towns are very interesting, although I would never set a foot in Pripyat.

      From the talk radio link:

Though every host is different, I’ve spent some time listening to Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Mark Levin. It is verboten to criticize any of these men if you consider yourself to be on the right side of the political spectrum, as I do.

If I ever get to the point where I acquiesce to the concept that one shouldn’t criticize members of one’s own political persuasion who are brutally rude, cater to the mob mentality, are radically inconsistent in their views, and are absolutely blind to idiocy within their own ranks, please pull the plug because I am obviously already brain dead.

By the way, from the libertarian perspective I would add Neil Boortz to that list. On one end of the scale we have credible, respectable, highly intelligent ambassadors of the small government philosophy like those at Cato and Reason and on the other we have arrogant embarrassing loud mouthed assholes like Bootz.

I am not too bright but the article merely mentions Limbaugh and Hannity.
Conor Friedersdorf really takes on their third cousin once removed Levin, which is shooting fish in a barrel.

I can bring y’all discouraging news in the morning too.

      Detroit police routinely underreport homicides
Actual ‘08 total gives city worst rate in nation

      • In one case, the police reclassified a homicide as a suicide.

      • Two men were stabbed to death, but were not included due to “insufficient evidence.”

      • A man who was beaten to death, according to the medical examiner, died by accident, according to the police.

      • A baby beaten to death never made the homicide tally, nor did a man who was found shot in the head.

What is more, records show Detroit police officers killed 10 civilians last year, a five-fold increase from 2007. That makes the Detroit department one of the most deadly in America even as it operates under federal supervision, for among other things, the use of lethal force and the illegal detention of witnesses.

      :-(

Insofar as these folks offer constructive, clear-eyed critiques of President Obama, they enrich public discourse.

They would lose 90% of their audience. For whatever reason, their ranting and raving gives them market share. Only wonks like Conor would be interested in hours upon hours of “constructive, clear eyed” discourse.

Conor Friedersdorf’s article echoes my sentiment perfectly. I have felt this way about conservative pundits for a long time.

I don’t know if anyone watches that “Life After People” show on the History Channel, but a lot of those abandoned places were mentioned in several episodes. It’s a really interesting show if you’re an ubber dork like me.

You sure the cops in Iran aren’t just trying to warn the people that they have lice? Can’t be clear from that angle.

Well, what do you expect? The Chicago Police department only has 13,400 cops! That’s barely enough to arrest people for possession. No way they have the resources to tackle actual crime!

The absurd comparisons on the page for the “Pete Hoekstra is a meme” are great. Actually made me smile. Damn that is a rarity from this blog!

Hoekstra-ing is funny, but not exactly an original meme:

Homer: Lisa, I know what’s going on here. They did it to Jesus, and now they’re doing it to me.
Marge: Are you comparing yourself to Our Lord?
      Homer: Well, in bowling ability.

No. I’m on my way to arrest him now and for once, use those handcuffs I have for their ORIGINAL purpose.

Let’s say, for shits n’ giggles, that ad was real. He just totally pissed off any interested Trekkers (NOT Trekkies, fyi) by mixing it up with Star Wars. The only thing that was going to draw was a flame war.

I suspect that some of the people wearing “Police” in Iran are wearing it for the same reason as the guys wearing “milk factory” on thier uniforms in English when CNN was filming in Saddam era Iraq.
