The silly thing is that another author could have written an article about how Bush was too flexible and changed his positions (steel tariffs, socialized medicare drugs, TARP and auto bailouts, etc.) and how his supporters re-elected and continued to back him because he was <strike>a soulless political hack, just like Obama</strike> responding to the needs of the country.

Count me among the perplexed by the "spittle" comment.

While the term "flip-flop" is slightly pejorative, for the most part, the article takes an Obama apologist approach. The basic theme seems to be, "Obama is continuing many of the policies for which he and his supporters criticized W. Bush, but it's okay because Obama got to those policy positions by being 'flexible' and appraising the public interest whereas Bush got there by being 'stubborn' and pursuing partisan advantage."

I know the media (and public, I suppose) is obsessed with personality-driven stories as a proxy for real news and issue analysis, but bad policies are bad policies regardless of how they came about. I'm not actually concerned about Obama avoiding serous criticism because of his image as a compassionate genius or Bush remaining unpopular as an ideological moron. I am concerned about what they are having my government do, in my name, using my taxes. This idea that the value of a turd floating in the toilet should be determined by considering whose ass produced it is 1) a poor way to determine value and 2) will likely delay the much-needed flushing.
