Nice Work, Media!

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

So in the several hours that we’ve known about the Sotomayor pick, Fox News’ Mike Huckabee put out a critical press release referring to her as “Maria,” the Politico referred to her as a “Latina single mother,” and NPR referred to her as “the daughter of immigrants.”

All three are wrong. Her first name is Sonia. She has no kids. And no, Puerto Rico isn’t a foreign country.

I don’t yet have an opinion on the merits of the pick. Need to read up on her a bit more.

NPR got that wrong? Must be a Republican mole.

Just the fact that they comment on her race is racism.

Its just so pathetically sad that we dont get any real discussion on where she stands on policy. Rather, feelgood comments about her racial background. Feel the same as the Balkonater. I need to know more about her policy positions before any call is made.

Puerto Rico isn’t a foreign country.

Of course not, it’s a colony protectorate.

Which is why I trust you as a journalist more than anybody else (that and I know where we stand together and where we stand apart on the issues). I look forward to reading your informed opinion on Sotomayor.

Yes, Puerto Rico is a colony (I should know, I was born and raised there). To say any different is to try to fool oneself.

As for her as a pick, I’ve had multiple arguments today with many of my friends (all Puerto Ricans) over how proud they are that she was picked. I cannot feel pride for something which I had no part in and only feel proud of accomplishments I attain (not obtain).

I think Obama was smart in picking a person who has no record on either side of the abortion track, too. Since she’s spent most of her time working on business cases, from what I read.

    Here’s a snapshot:

    http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/05/26/us/0526-scotus.html

For my reading of this and some other sites, she seems to be what you would expect from the Prez as a pick for SCOTUS.

Other than that, I just have to yaawwwwnnnnnnnnnnnn…..identity politics are so boring.

That just goes to show that you can’t get reliable reporting from the mainstream press anymore. you have to go to bloggers for accuracy these days.

Wow I’m really surprised Obama had the guts to go out on a limb and pick a Yale grad.

“The court of appeals is where policy is made”

before most of you bash her for that kind of comment and thought process you might want to consider a lot of folks on this site LOVE the idea of the courts making policy, i.e. hamdan. Can’t have it both ways folks. At this rate we may as well just toss our constitution in the trash and give unelected judges jurisdiction over EVERYTHING and forget all this elections crap.

Can you tell how much I dislike 1/3 of our government?

  10. #10 |  JP |

#9 You only dislike 1/3? Have the other 2 branches done something worthwhile that I missed?

I lived in Samoa for two years and I spoke with quite a few American Samoans (different country). Most of them couldn’t really define what their status was. It’s like they were somewhere in between being an independent state and part of the US.

Having been a student in the 60s and seeing the change in the system since then, I can only say affirmative action in action. BO is our first affirmative action president.

this’ll go a long way in helping the GOP further marginalize themselves…

Care to provide the context around that quote beyond just a link?

She was describing one difference of clerking at the district court versus the appeals court. Since any decision handed down by the appeals court is policy for that circuit, I don’t see the problem with the cherry-picked quote.

Remind me again how the mainstream media is critical to liberty and democracy?..

Wonder if she’s paid up on her taxes.

With luck, maybe we’ll find out she wasn’t a former prosecutor, either. I think there are a number of cases headed that way that affect prosecutorial issues. All we need is someone on The Court who thinks prosecutors are part of the “new professionalism” and we are now safe in throwing away those pesky Constitutional restrictions that make their jobs so difficult.

I listen to Fox for all my news and I was amazed to find out that Puerto Rico is 99% drunk on rum all the time with only 4 people not in prison. Apparently it is also the epicenter (O’Reilley taught me that word) of satanic voodoo worshipers that hate America.

Also, America liberated Puerto Rico from pirates and gave them roads, airports, hospitals, schools and religion.

I know Puerto Rico had two American Idol contenders this year (Fox). I feel it is important to know if Sotomayor is pro-Taíno and anti-Carib. Race is just so important in America.

NPR is a hoot. Every Dem is a rags to riches heroic story of constant fighting. Every Repub was born into extreme money.

Going out on a limb here…new boss will be same as old boss.

Just 1/3? You have plenty of reason to dislike 3/3.

    @LibertyTiger

Of course Obama picked a Yale grad. ivy league alumni are more intelligent, harder working, and better looking than a grad of any other school.

If you don’t believe me, just ask any Yale grad.

I dislike 4/3 of our government, mostly because of the quality of education.

A Hispanic female, Ivy League, Court of Appeals judge who spent most of her career backing big business. Daring, no?

  29. #29 |  David Chesler |

LibertyTiger and Mark, she’s not a Yale grad, she only went to law school in New Haven. She’s a Princeton grad.

Puerto Rico isn’t foreign, but it isn’t exactly America — otherwise the Sharks couldn’t have sung about coming to America, and New Jersey would also have an Olympic team. It’s not unusual to describe someone who moves from Puerto Rico to the Bronx (home of more Puerto Ricans than any other county not on the island) as an immigrant.

I’m not Puerto Rican, but I am from the Bronx, and I’ll take a little pride that a Bronx girl made good.

(And as usual, when I submit a comment from my work computer it doesn’t show up.)

John Yoo Warns Against “Results-Oriented” Sotomayor
    By Eric Kleefeld – May 26, 2009, 2:49PM

John Yoo, the former Justice Department official who helped craft the legal rationales for the Bush Administration’s “enhanced interrogation” regime, has come out strongly against Sonia Sotomayor — on the grounds that she could decide cases on the basis of outcomes rather than the law:

“Conservatives should defend the Supreme Court as a place where cases are decided by a faithful application of the Constitution, not personal politics, backgrounds, and feelings. Republican senators will have to conduct thorough questioning in the confirmation hearings to make sure that she will not be a results-oriented voter, voting her emotions and politics rather than the law.”

In other breaking news, John Yoo has absolutely no sense of self-awareness.

Hahaha, yeah as a Puerto Rican I found it hilarious they kept referring to her parents as immigrants. Now if only they could pronounce her name correctly… :/
