On the Road
Saturday, May 9th, 2009Sorry I’ve been AWOL. A man’s first trip to Las Vegas tends to pull him away from the computer.
I didn’t think I’d like Vegas. I expected it to be excessive, ostentatious, contrived, and ridiculous. It is all of those things, but in a really wonderful way. I actually love it, and have had a great time. More on that later.
In the meantime, I had a piece up at Reason on Friday reviewing the new movie American Violet and the new TV series, Dallas DNA.
For now, I’m off to see Penn & Teller’s show here at the Rio.
TheAgitator.com
Exactly my feelings on Vegas.
Take in Mystere at Treasure Island if you can get tickets. (Tix 4 Tonite beside the M&M Store has the best deals.)
Pen & Teller’s show at the Rio is always a blast. Doesn’t hurt they happen to be remarkable people even outside of the world of stage magic.
Penn & Teller! Vegas! Jealous!
Enjoy. Don’t forget to give Penn a bible after the show, he loves that.
First time!? By the time I was 21, I had been there three times. Last I remember, the best buffet in town was the Mirage’s.
Penn & Teller’s show is awesome. The magic bullet act rocks. I got to keep the bullet as a souvenir. Until customs confiscated it!! Still awesome. Love you website, enjoy the show!!
Ditto #3 (Edwin).
Yeah, I didn’t love it or anything, but I expected to hate Vegas, but it had some pretty cool stuff. If it is still there, try the Marie Calendar restaurant – for a name better known for frozen dinners, the place is pretty darn good.
I havent been back to Vegas in several years. Stayed at the Excalibur over by that pyramid hotel (forgot the name). I love Vegas. I consider it my little libertartian homeland. I still cant get past the gambling and prostitution being legal there and yet they have the pot laws they have tho.
Prostitution is not legal in the city of Las Vegas.
Out of 40 trips to Vegas only two weren’t for “work”. You get over judging people (and yourself) on whether they like Vegas or not.
If you actually live there, it’s a city with the highest probability that an average looking guy who’s not rich will land a super hot chick. All those showgirls and bartenders have to marry someone.
Vegas is Disneyworld for adults. If I don’t get there periodically, I get the shakes.

I have some packing to do.
I have never been to Vegas but I can’t help but think this AC/DC tune would be on my mind if I did:

Vegas bores me to pieces.
However, it’s something that I think every American should see at least once.
Vegas is (occasionally) tolerable in 3 – 5 day doses.
Living there, however, is a different story entirely.
Radley went on a bender. HA.
Kidding. I’ve never been either and I’m 28. Now I have no excuse since I live within 4-5 hours.
I was through last fall for a weekend and was impressed with how much the downtown area had improved. The sportbook at the Nugget was plush without the ‘movie theater’ feel of the books on the strip. Apparently they also have the water tube that goes THROUGH the shark tank for the kids. And what card player doesn’t want to play at least a few hands at Binions? Yes, Vegas rocks…but Reno has skiing…and libertarians instead of Democrats.
Vegas is always a lot more fun than you’d expect. I get out there with my friends about once a year for 2-3 days. There’s so much ridiculous stuff to see and great shows and restaurants. There’s really no reason to even gamble if you don’t care for it. What makes Vegas great is that everyone else there is also there to have an adult oriented good time.
Just remember that the corollary to ‘What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas’ is ‘Arrive on vacation, leave on probation.’ Have fun, but do what the nice Security guard tells you to. Security will do everything they can to avoid interfering with your fun, but when they have to, they’re usually reasonably effective at it.
I think it is a dangerous game being played by President Obama concerning the waterboarding memos. If Cheney says it saved thousands of lives, and he’s lying, Obama could nuke him out of the water. But Obama can’t because it’s true! Cheney knows not only that there are detailed papers that could be released that show leaning on these guys worked, but that AQ had help from the European left!
Vegas is one of those weird places that’s good in small doses, like pre-Katrina New Orleans…though I found that I had more of a stomach for Vegas than I did for NO (since I’m not a heavy drinker).
It also helps if you stay someplace that is slightly sane. I have heard stories that lead me to believe that Circus Circus is a sanity-leeching experience (and I’m not just referring to Hunter S. Thompson).
Went to Vegas with my parents when I was 21. How nerdy am I?
Loved it though, and my Pa taught me the basics of counting cards. This was before poker was a big deal, though, so only did blackjack and ate a lot.
Yum – all you can eat shrimp & lobster.
My first trip to Vegas – I went just for the grub.
Memorial Day – woke up late, had nothing planned to do.. My best friend & I decided we needed shrimp to live. Ended up driving the 4 1/2 hours to Vegas. We ate, drove the strip a couple times, then turned around to come home.. It was worth the 10 hours of traffic it took to get back to L.A…
But oh how jealous I am that you get to see Penn & Teller.
Sounds like so much fun!
