Weingarten on Dogs

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

I’d humbly submit that Gene Weingarten is the best writer working at a newspaper anywhere in the country right now. And he may be the all-time winner in the “writing about dogs” genre.

His column this week is great.

Also, I recommend his recent book Old Dogs Are the Best Dogs, particularly if you have a aging pooch.

Have you ever read James Harriot, Radley?tag=theagitator-20 As a dog lover I think you’d appreciate his stuff. Especially Dog Stories.

I was just looking for the link to post that story about the mountain lion attack. A dogs loyalty is priceless.

Ben beat me to it. Herriot was just flat out great. Though, in fairness to Radley, Weingarten is pretty good as well.

I’m an avid poker player and I was disappointed that during your chat with the pros, they kept blaming Bush for the legal problems of online poker. It is Sen. Harry Reid that is the #1 enemy of online poker because it cuts in on Nevada’s business.

“To paraphrase the British writer Frank Skinner, never expect too much from an animal that is surprised by its own farts.”

LOL! That just described some humans too.

He’s not kidding. I have three dogs sitting with me right now and all three have a knuckle!

And, they are knuckleheads. One of them likes to sleep on my shoulders. All three bark at anyone that enters or exits the house. The other night, one of them decided is was a good idea to stick thier head between the couch cushions and bark for about 15 minutes – thankfully it was muffled!

All three are horribly spoiled and lead a very good life.

Herriot was just flat out great.

A lot of his stories are collected from other vets, as I understand it, but it doesn’t take away at all from his story-telling ability.

If I wasn’t limited by finances, I would have at least 10 dogs of varying breeds and sizes. We’d run through the neighborhood at night ripping up garbage and howling at the moon together, chasing cats and generally living it up. hell yeah….
