Quentin Tarantino guided the contestants through movie tune night tonight, and nobody picked a song from a Tarantino movie. Here’s how I’d rank them:

Kris Allen
His best performance so far. He sang the song “Falling Slowly,” which I’d never heard, but just bought. Beautiful song, beautiful arrangement, and some really nice restraint from Allen in the way he sang it. It’s the first time I’ve really liked his performance. Sorta’ sounded like Rufus Wainwright.

Adam Lambert
Wasn’t his best, but even at 80 percent, he’s phenomenal. Incredible sense of theater and flash. I’m sure Steppenwolf fans won’t be happy with the way he glammed up the song. Doesn’t matter. The guy’s a star.

Anoop Desai
I hate Bryan Adams, but Desai was really impressive again tonight. This is his groove — the souled-up pop ballad. The liberties he took with the melody were spot-on. Bought himself another week or two at least.

Danny Gokey

He actually sounded like Lionel Richie for the first third of the song. Again, I wish the guy would pick a song you don’t constantly hear treacling through your typical mall department store, but, once again, he can flat out sing. He’s middle of the pack this week, but I’m sure he’ll be fine in the voting.

Allison Iraheta

I’m a fan, but that cheesy Aerosmith song is really a waste of her talent. Didn’t like it at all. Simon Cowell said she’s the last best hope for the girls. Given that there are only two of them left, I guess that was a dig on Lil Rounds.

Matt Giraud

Again, I’m a Giraud fan. But again, I hate Bryan Adams. There’s no soul in Brian Adams. And “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman” is such dreadful pap. It was a bad song, and he didn’t sing it particularly well. And there are so many other great movie songs he could have chosen. There’s a decentchance he’ll get voted off this week. But there’s also a pretty good chance that if he does, the judges will give him another week.

Lil Rounds

Okay, so I’ll confess. For reasons I can’t quite explain, I do like the song “The Rose.” And I love gospel music. So I should like a gospelled-up version of “The Rose.” But she was all over the place. It just didn’t work. I think the judges are ready for her to go. Guess we’ll see if the audience is, too. Probably the most disappointing contestant this year.

Radley, you’ve gotta see Once (where Falling Slowly comes from). It’s gorgeous, and the music is just excellent.

The “obscure” song did happen to win the Academy Award. That’s really the only reason I knew about it, but I’ll take that over hit Dianne Warren Aerosmith trash any day. That Aerosmith thing is probably my least favorite song of all time. And any adult contemporary soundtrack Bryan Adams is not far behind.

Gotta agree on the Brian Adams junk. That’s the best they could get from EVERY movie ever made ever? C’mon! Although I am glad nobody took a Disney song (Circle of Life). L’il Rounds is awful. I love Bette Midler (can’t explain it) and I also love gospel but she didn’t do either one well.

Add yet another ignorant American who had never heard of “Falling Slowly” or “Once”, but it’s now on my Netflix queue.

A Rufus Wainwright fan, eh Radley? Cool.

Just for fun, I’m trying to think of a song from a QT film I would pick. Maybe “Street Life” or “Across 110th Street” from Jackie Brown would make good choices, but each would be pretty difficult to re-arrange/update for today’s audiences.

    Then again, I can’t sing a lick, so it’s kinda academic…

The movie where Falling Slowly is from, Once, is full of great music. The story line is decent, but the music is awesome.

Regarding “Falling Slowly” and Glen Hansard: If you dig music and like movies, rent his movie “Once”. Really laid back movie with that great soundtrack. Chicks dig it, too.

    Buh-bye, Lil.

I’m pretty sure Adam is great for AI and below average as a real artist. But I don’t like Danny Gans either and he’s HUGE in Vegas.

    “I love Bette Midler (can’t explain it)…”

There might be one obvious explanation.

Forgot to mention final three: Allison, Danny, Adam.

Very funny Boyd. Happily married- wait that doesn’t prove anything…
How about this, I only think Rufus Wainright is o.k.

I was floored when Kris started singing Falling Slowly. It’s such a beautiful. low-key song and so outside the realm of normal AI stuff. He was definitely my #1 last night. Anoop was surprisingly good, and I wasn’t thrilled with Adam’s choice but still love him. Lil’ Rounds just hasn’t lived up to her original audition; she’s flat and misses notes every week. Everyone else was forgetable.

I’m still waiting for Adam to tease out the hair and do some serious hair metal screeching. That dude could rock out on Dr. Feelgood. Other than that he’s just doing the same thing every week and it’s a little old now. This season sucks.

If Adam had maybe screamed one more time,
I would have become his love slave.
I still say his talents will not translate to record sales any more then Ruben, Fantasia, Taylor, or Jordin. He will get to have a nice career on Broadway with Clay though.

Agree with your rankings 100%. Kris was da bomb, and it will come down to him, Danny, and Adam, none of which have been in the bottom 3 yet.

And Idol is a great example of “crowd selective hearing”, since I have nothing better to call it, someone smatter than me can come up with the correct label. I mean, does the crowd actually listen to the words coming out of Simon’s mouth? Or do they boo just out of habit? Concerning Adam, he said something to the effect of, “some people are going to hate it, some people are going to love it.” You’re telling me that deserved to be booed? Man alive.

And Simon was right. After Adam sang, my wife turned to me and said that she loved Adam last week, when he was quiet, laid back, but hates when he yells, as he did in that performance.

I absolutely love Rufus Wainright. And I say that with a perfectly unblemished record of staunch heterosexuality. I also love Bette Midler but I have never told my wife. She still looks at me funny when I start singing along with Rufus.

Oh. And Adam is going to win it all.

I say this every week, but I can’t stand Adam. He sounds like a glam Axel Rose wanna-be. I really thought people would start seeing through him by now.

Can’t stand Gokey either. Ulimate cheesy.

Kris was outstanding. Would love to see it come down to him and Allison.

Kind of on theme with idol stuff.

Anybody seen this? Frumpy looking woman with very good voice surprises everyone.

  17. #17 |  Buck |

Yeah. I have seen her Stephen. John Cole over at Balloon-Juice says “She’s a Scottish woman who sings like Julie Andrews but looks like Jack Black in drag.” :-)

    It was amazing though.
