Haley Says No
Monday, March 23rd, 2009Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour has vetoed a bill that would forbid the state’s government from seizing private land to hand over to other private parties.
It might lead to the first veto override of Barbour’s administration. That would be a good thing.
Hard to believe this guy’s name is sometimes bandied about for national office.

I disgree Radley. I think it’s pretty clear that a poitician would veto this bill because of his corporate friends. And you can’t be any sort of serious candidtate for national office without corporate friends.
I don’t know much about Haley Barbour. He could be fully in the pocket of developers and planners who see using government to force people to sell their property as just too easy to pass up. Or, he could be among the many, many people who just fundamentally believe in government power and hate the idea of losing any of it, especially while they are in office. Or, he could be an idiot. And, obviously, all those groups can (and do) overlap.
If he had any brains, he would have done what the weasels here in California did and drafted a toothless “compromise bill” that exempted 90% of the use of eminent domain and then spent millions advertising how “extreme” the real bill was. I met plenty who voted yes on both bills, not realizing that a ‘yes’ on the planners’ bill was a ‘no’ on the real bill, but people can’t resist the idea of a reasonable compromise, even if it undermines the overall effort.
I think he must have summoned the Mighty Chan to be that principled in conservatism.
A guy associated with racist organizations trying national office? Blah.
freedomfan post 2-Brilliant post!
Or that he is hailed as a “true CONservative” whatever that means anymore.
The modern definition of “true conservative” apparently means racist or pandering to racists and love of government power.
